I'd be cool with it so long as his trades got pricey. Still too cheap imo especially if he can become a permanent staple. Or at the very least make him still not present 24/7 but show up every now and then at the designated trading post. Either one: Increasing prices or Unpredictable arrival time.

Given his affinity with Beefalo, having to use a Beefalo horn to summon him (for a time) would also incentivize the current minimal usage of a beefalo horn.

He’s the “wandaring” trader, not the “conveniently come to vist you” Trader.

This idea would encourage players to sit in base and do nothing. Meanwhile an actual Wandering trader encourages you to explore your game map every so often to luck up on him.

What does exploring the game map do for a world you’ve lived in 50,000 days and fully revealed the map for?

Well that’s very strictly a KLEI Problem, if more randomized events happened during these trips to points you’ve explored a billion times happened: it would = More interesting gameplay, but if it’s just a casual stroll through empty fields of grass it’s an annoying search for the trader.

Now if mobs, weather, etc changed the dynamic a bit… such as just two examples: Having Swamp Tentacles randomly respawn in new locations in the swamp after you’ve cleared them all out. Or if Wild Rifts opened up near you spewing out a random batch of moon mutated threats.

Then having to go out and seek the “wandering” trader would loop into back into the gameplay a bit.

But also let’s be honest here: The Wandering Trader is really only useful for newbies/Early game so I guess it’s serving it’s intended purpose.

His trades aren't even that good

I truly do not think that allowing the player to add one (1) additional stop in their base to the wandering trader would lead to a world where players exclusively sit in their base farming pig houses and beefalo so they can buy a few gears and living logs every 20+ days.

Your missing my point, there is very little reason or incentive to go out and explore the games “world” allowing people to place these things in their base, just makes one less thing you would otherwise explore around to locate.

Personally I was not a fan of being able to relocate Pearl either, there’s no reason to ever revisit her island again unless you want to farm some dumb boss.

I don't think being able to relocate Pearl to your base after an entire questline led to a world where players exclusively sit in their base collecting bottles every 2 days so they can buy fish food and bundles of shells.

I was just thinking about this, for any long term use of the character his trades should be improved over in-game time first. And the good stuff shouldn’t come cheap, or restock often.

He should sell convienient stuff like armour.

He could sell log armour for like 12 ash. Sell Marble armour for 12 beefalo wool.

And a rare chance to sell a thulicite helmet for 5 pig skin.

Right now he sells moon shards after lunar hail, which isn't exactly useful since you can easily get them in bulk. Maybe instead he could sell a few pure brilliance? As if he found it on the ground after a bird ate some shards.

That’s a start yeah, but that’s still early game.
I mean things that would be useful in the late game to keep buying, like after the first winter he could maybe rarely have a walrus tusk in his inventory, and replenish one after 2 winters, or get yellow and green gems after you killed AG and restock after long periods, or pearl’s bottles after crab king, etc.

Pretty sure he always could sell moon shards.
