Why Marotters are so good (and if you hate them, why it is a good thing)

they prioritise food and stuff left on the floor. if there is meat they go for that first but i have watched the buggers steal an orange gem from me once just for the fun of it

I think they will steal any item that’s considered edible, but that includes items that can be eaten by various mobs. They shouldn’t steal an amulet or armor, but they could go for resources like gems, logs, etc.

It seems like they mostly want to steal meat from players’ inventories though.

If you want to have 12 for two full stacks of souls in your inventory, it's definitely the way to go

Indeed. Plus even fighting them is easy, they don't do that much damage, and their attack period is basically as long as that of beefaloes, any character with ~50 damage weapon will only have to dodge one attack (not counting the first when they come towards you) if fighting a single marrotter.

Adding any form of a silly and happy jester anywhere in the game can do that. but it does not mean that it is in the right position and is the atmosphere shaping needed for the game.
