Dracian
[First things first, I'm not a native english speaking user, so please forgive the possible mistakes I'll make] Hey there, I just managed to complete the new imperative by demolishing Demolior and I thought that a little personal post-mortem could be interesting. So here it is (For the context, I'm a seasonned ONI player, I'll try to be as objective as possible) I tried multiple asteroids before finding the one that fitted me. In hindsight, I think all of them could have led me to success, but I wanted something that suited me well. Anyway. I managed to blow up Demolior in 112 cycles. My asteroid was Metal Rich and had Slime Mold and honestly, if the first option was not that impactful, it was really the second one that allowed me to rush the victory, while constructing a solid base. Honestly, it felt a little bit easy, towards the end. So if you're having trouble completing the imperative, go for Slime Molds in the seed selection. On the other hand, avoid it at all costs if you're in for a challenge. The very first cycles went like a breeze. The huge amount of Oxylite and the tremendous amount of Calories produced by the Smoker allows players to focus on other stuff than immediate survival, which is fine, by my standards as there's a gigantic asteroid heading towards you that you'll need to blow up, Armaggedon-style. Even though the Peat Burner is a nice generator, I would advice against playing Bionics if you're not experienced : you have a sh*t-ton of food available and you'll need to walk on or go in some water at some point. Save you the trouble. Or not. Again, your choice if you're in for a challenge or not. Basically, saving all your Slime and Bleach Stone to produce Biodiesel is the key. Note that there are a few Pufts on the asteroid, so even if you don't have Slime Molds, it is possible to get some thanks to them. As for the Glass needed to build the Emulsifier, you'll have to be able to build a Glass Forge as there won't be enough in the POI scattered in the asteroid (90 kg or so, IIRC). However, rushing to a POI with a Glass Panel and deconstructing it will grant you access to glass in the Care Package, which can be an alternate solution, albeit a risky one. I think the greatest challenge is actually getting Petroleum/Biodiesel. Once you get a steady supply of any of them, you can blow the big bad rock in 15 to 20 cycles. Now, questions. Is the Slime Molds solution is too easy ? Maybe, but let's not forget ONI is a complex game. Having a solution that allows more casual players to complete the challenge is not a bad thing. Because, hey, blowing an asteroid to pieces is incredibly satisfying. And the ending is really nice to watch. Let's not do some gatekeeping. 200 cycles is too much or too few ? I honestly think it's balanced, but there's something that could be done to make things more... interesting. What if each impact with a missile slowed down a little bit Demolior ? You still have 200 cycles before impact, but each missile crashing on the Asteroid adds 1, 2 or whatever number of cycles, buying you some time. An other alternative could be that each missile fired reduces the impact zone if you miss the objective. And about the rewards ? I was honestly disappointed when I realised the asteroid was just blown to pieces and that there was no special meteor shower right after that (Iridium meteor shower ? Yes, please !). An interesting plot twist would be that Demolior was just one among many others and that you had to blow to pieces one such asteroid every 400 cycles (because, hey, you deserve some rest after that, but better be prepared for the next big one). An other interesting plot twist would be that the missile do not actually destroy demolior, but stabilizes its orbit, granting you access to a whole new special asteroid colonizable and full of Iridium. Any other inputs ? Yes ! Just like someone said in an other topic, give the opportunity to battle against Demolior on other asteroids too ! This was really a great challenge and personally, I loved it. I really hope it wasn't to boring to read this and that it will give some people some ideas. Thanks Klei for the new planet and the opportunity to test it in beta. So far, between Frozen Planet and Bionic Dupes, it really is the DLC I have enjoyed the most ! Have fun and so long, folks ! 2 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/166004-first-personnal-inputs-for-the-ppp-will-try-to-be-as-objective-as-possible/ Share on other sites
synnic
Good points all around. The DLC seems to, counterintuitively, incentivize building your base around Demolior's strike range and then letting it hit for the crazy quantity of geysers/resources it gives. This seems to be a weird balancing choice. I agree that there should be some sort of reward for actually destroying it, and it should be more rewarding than letting it strike. I am personally in love with the DLC and the new critters/plants/production chains. My biggest issue is the lack of any source of refined carbon other than converting your precious and very slow to farm amber at an abysmal conversion ratio using steam chambers/glass forges. Mariolo
There's a difficulty setting that can change how long it takes for the meteorite to land. You can set it to be as short as 100 cycles if you want a challenge. This would also get significantly more difficult if you are going for carnivore and supersustainable too.
