I think this is a nice challenge, not too easy, not too hard. Did it on first try.

I had the projectiles at cycle 172 (having more than 5 in flight in one cell seems to crash the game? Edit: fire 5 -> watch impact on starmap -> repeat works. But goal does not get registered as fulfilled), but I was not rushing from about cycle 125 on, since I saw I would make it. Used only my non-bionic 3 starting dupes and went the biodiesel route, via the fronds and phyto oil.

However, I did let the demolior crash as well as an experiment, and it looks like that may be an interesting variation. It seems to establish some additional geysers and delivers a ton of metal. On the minus-side, you get massive damage and some lava to deal with.

What approaches did you take and what were your experiences?

I was doing an All Achievements run, so Demolier came secondary to securing food for carnivore. I knew what I needed to setup before I made the blastshots though:

  • Peats. Peat is everywhere. Not an issue
  • Refined Iron/Nickel. I had a Gold Volcano but Blastshot Maker doesn't accept Gold. Needed to crush 10T of ore at the rock crusher to make the necessary metal
  • Biodiesel. Harvesting natural seakomb, killing Pacus so they don't steal the seakomb, and farmer stations to make sure you have enough leaf (you don't need a lot - about 10 harvests total)
  • Bleachstone. Bleachstone is also everywhere. Not an issue
  • Power. The Blastshot Maker is very power hungry (960W) which can sneak up on you
  • Emulsifier. This requires glass, so in SO this requires teching into Radiation research for the Forge without some mega shenanigans

I ended up starting to make the blastshots at around cycle 76, made all of them by cycle 92, and destroyed Demolior at cycle 98.

You can get the required glass from deconstructing POI windows. The 3x2 background ones are 5kg each, and the Somnium POI has glass window tiles. You could also melt some sand at volcanoes or by digging down into magma.

I had absolutely no problem doing the required research and then making 100kg of glass with the glassmaker by just dripping it on some ice.

Magma's not hot enough to melt sand. You'd need the low heat output of a metal volcano or use a metal refinery (mega shenanigans)

I was just providing some alternatives to doing the research, but it is easily doable before cycle 50 (to give ample time to produce the required blastshots even at the highest demolior difficulty).

My bad, I forgot ambient magma is colder than a volcano's magma. And leaving 200kg of sand in front of a vacuumed-out volcano doesn't really sound like mega shenanigans. You could even leave 200kg of dirt, which will then form a sand tile (and entomb any metal) to better absorb heat.

Funny story. I did just that , deconstructed the POI windows and ordered my dupes to sweep the glass.

And it got thanos snapped. It's gone. The stats showed 0kg of Glass, i had no work errands requiring glass queued and nowhere in the area there was any thing that could cause glass to evaporate. It's just gone.. Not sure what happened. I ended up cheating in some glass it's a test world anyways.

I've run into POI buildings showing as being made of a material before, but not yielding that material when deconstructed, but never with the background windows and tiles; I'll try and test to see if something got changed (I'll admit, I always found it a little cheap that I could deconstruct a window to get a pittance of glass, then have it show up in the printing pod from then on because that counted as "discovering" it).

I did see the glass cubes physically fall from the deconstructed windows.

The material got somehow lost or glitched out upon delivery back to base when i wasn't looking.

And i could not track it with the UI because it was shown as 0kg like it didn't exist anymore.

Are you sure they're not on the floor somewhere because a dupe dropped them? If the glass isn't accessible by a sweeper or a dupe then it won't show up in the resource panel

Maybe it is somewhere. I tried to visually scan the route down from the POI i mined those but could not see the glass amongst the debris.

No clue what happened to it.

Demolior is suppsoed to be a challenge, you are not supposed to be rewarded for ignoring it.

I'd rather see it as a choice, perhaps a less optimal choice, but a choice. Makes it more interesting. They guy I quoted though knowns far more than I do about game design, so maybe I'm not too far off base here.

The person I was responignt o wanted to remove some of the downside of impact, making shooting it down less interesting. I dont see how making the easier choice more rewarding fosters more interestign decisions. Honetsly even with the neutronium i think letting the asteroid hit is still stronger than blowign it up. By the time you bother with space drilling you will probably move to thermium anyway.
