[Poll] On Character Downsides

95 members have voted

  1. 1. Do the downsides of the characters that you play present a factor in your gameplay?

  2. 2. How intense do you prefer the downsides of your played characters?

    • Very Intense (you have to play the game around mitigating the downside; it significantly impacts gameplay with no probable solution available)
    • Intense (The downside is a major factor in play as few options or forced options exist to deal with it)
    • Fair (The downside certainly affects gameplay majorly, but can be circumvented with the right planning)
    • Lenient (The downside is a factor in gameplay but there are plenty of ways to work around it)
    • Very Lenient (The downside doesn't really impact gamplay and is just there for flavor)
    • Irrelevant (The downsides are vastly outshined by character strengths)
      0
    • None (no downside at all)
  3. 3. In your view, which characters have the most intense downsides?

  4. 4. In your view, which characters have the most fun downsides to play around?

Oh 100% agree with that. Woodie's downside was gutted, I loved having to regulate tree chopping from DS. Then it became the issue of full moons only. Now... well you can skip that. Just wish there were more Lumberjack skills. I think of Woodie as a Lumberjack first, cursed were dude second. Loved woodie before. :c But I know his downside was kind of contentious so whatevs. I can't change anything but I sure can whine about it :P

Honestly I thought about it as I was writing the original post, I really do think the silver amulet would’ve been a perfect compromise for full moons at least. Though, his lack of any downsides (because spawning more treeguards sure is problematic especially when beaver doesn’t spawn them at all) alongside his lack of progression means he will never really be a character I like all that much

fun=subjective   subjective=opinion     "But hey, these are just my opinions. I find adversity really fun."     Learn to read. Sorry that was rude. I find having to play around downsides to be really enjoyable to the core experience of Don't Starve. Removing that really makes all characters feel the same to me even if they have different traits to set them apart. I don't want everyone to be Wilson+ I want Wilson +/-.

But before skill trees everyone was wilson+/-

I understand that it's your opinion, but please, don't spread hate just because you don't like something, when at the end you have to defend your point by it being your opinion

Also, the hardest downside is Warly. Not because it's difficult to eat 2 meaty stews every 2 days, but because it's a horribly boring and tedious downside. The difficulty comes from wanting to continue playing Warly after only eating the same foods forever.

Preach this! The reasons I enjoy SW Warly in comparison to DST is because he actually rewards you for a diverse diet without straight up just deleting options(Dried foods, regular ingredients, etc), while also not having to be literally tied to a farm in order to have any perks, or constantly carry a portable crockpot because his pouch is terrible, and he can't even eat basic ingredients/get better value from food he does have.

Making Warly combust into flames from eating repeat meals doesn't bring any gameplay value compared to actually giving the player an incentive to try out different options instead of double meaty stew, and batbats or salves to heal during boss fights. Dried seaweeds or jerky couldn't be spammed as Warly, but were still options instead of being pure preservation methods. I sometimes actually just tanked, and ate poisonous dishes like Monster lasagna for hunger, because I knew Warly's natural crockpot food bonus could heal off the damage I took from it.

It was also a joy to experiment with random food combinations, and see if I get anything from it. Sometimes, I get brand-new amazing dishes I have literally never seen before, that get further buffed by Warly's pursuit of culinary advancements to give me a really nice sanity, or health boost that I really needed. This isn't something you'd ever see playing as DST Warly. I also appreciated being able to still use regular foods in some form despite obviously not being able to spam them. As an occassional treat for when I get bored of the crockpot(which Warly actually made exciting to use). Getting butter was an active joy, due to Fresh Fruit crepes being further amplified by it to the point of it basically being a full stat refill.

Meanwhile DST Warly to me feels like some bland moba support character design, that forces somebody to sacrifice their own fun if they want to actually win instead of being destroyed on repeat for 45 minutes(fortunately, DST only does one half of that). The reason nobody likes to play Medic in TF2 is because he is an inherently weak class on his own with a moveset only capable of giga-buffing someone else to do the job for him. That's how it feels to play Warly.

His all perks have been stripped away for a new set of purely supportive skills, that are only tied to one specific source of food (farming) just to have some gameplay value you otherwise had by default. He lost everything good about him in exchange for just a bunch of mediocre dishes that are of no value to him. There is no reason to play Warly alone, and your fun as him hinges on your team's competence. You need a good Wolfgang to use the jelly, or a good Wigfrid to use the garlic. Why? Because Warly can't take matters into his own hands, due to benefitting nearly the least from his own skills.

SW Warly was a really simple, but good design with clear-cut perks. He may not have been the best survivor, but the mere act of playing him well was the reward itself. DST Warly suffers from all those new flashy perks being built upon absolutely nothing. Those perks on paper are completely fine, but they simply don't work without someone else specifically filling in the missing parts. Warly's a pretty seat without any legs to be a proper chair.

That was the biggest reason for my very short warly career. There is no reward for using different foods, only punishment, and *many foods arent even available.* okay warly, you go and wax on about the beauty of the cooked potato that you wont eat. see what i care.
