Why don’t mole worms eat moon glass?

Recommended Posts

Maybe it‘s too organic for their taste.

Did anyone try how rocklobsters react to it in comparison? I‘m just curious.

Its apparently an organic enough material to where most mobs that interact with minerals just don’t, including rock lobsters and slurtle/snurtles.

Ah thanks I was looking for that! Maybe then my idea of it being too organic in nature was not too far fetched

As confirmed by Wickerbottom!

I think moonglass is hard at regular temperatures, but melts if gets above 30 celcius similar to galium. thats why the vitreoasis got water and glass together maybe.

the vitreoasis(in game) is just another kind of stalagmite(real life).

The real question is why do Moleworms eat any minerals? It really doesn't make sense, worms can only live in soft soils and are put off by too much rock while moles are largely insectivores. Moleworms steal flint & rock that would otherwise be present near the Florid Posturn for new players. They interfere with the player and force chest spam. They're annoying to deal with, as they need a tool most players won't craft right at the beginning of the game (either shovel or hammer. In my experience most players will usually only craft one or the other until they're at their Alchemy Engine) and they have to be dealt with lest something valuable accidentally be left on the ground and absconded with. Moleworms are one of those things which punish new players while also not rewarding experienced players.

Now if instead they went for crops and we could mass produce them with giant crops, that would be a different story. I would love to be able to make Guacamole more than once for example.

Moleworms provide a significant amount of utility, especially in the hands of an experienced player. The biggest thing I used them for was easy cleanup/storage. Because moleworms go after minerals, and their burrows hold 50 stacks of items, they were my ideal choice for doing things like picking up all the gold from PK or cleaning up various loot from the ruins (which they can pickup every single drop that is not nightmare fuel). Once you need the resources, you can dig up the burrow and all of the goods are conveniently stacked for you.

Moleworms are also arguably the best “beginner” meat source for a new player. Moleworms can be relocated, don’t fight back, work in every season, and are easy to bait and kill (drop a dud mineral to get their attention, then wack them with an axe or higher to instantly kill them). They also have the side utility of being able to dig up their burrows as an early game mineral farm, since they will always drop 1 mineral and will pretty quickly relocate their den. The only downside I can think of is their nocturnal nature of only coming out during dusk/night. Compare that to bunnies, which while they come out during the day, have several downsides such as inactive in a season and almost always requiring a trap for a new player to comfortably kill, also now summon a miniboss that there’s no way a new player is going to comfortably fight back.
