Suggestions for Walter Perks

Recommended Posts

Thank you Klei for listening to everyone's suggestions for Walter, you did a lovely job, and a special thank you for even implementing better versions of some of my Walter Skills ideas.

I'm here to suggest a few small adjustments to some Perks.

Campfire Enthusiast:
Add another recipe for an Endothermic version, this would double the utility of this Perk.
If recipe bloat is of concern, then simply add an interaction where adding Nitre to the fire turns it Endothermic, once put out it returns to normal fire. This would pair with Pioneer’s Panache perfectly.

Woby Here, Woby There:
Allow Woby to target ghost players. If Woby's inventory has a Teltalle Heart, she'll use it on them. If it has a Life-Giving Amulet, she'll drop it next to them. Allowing Woby to revive friends!

I wish I had an idea to give to Twine Twirler, I can't think of something thematically fitting for it but it's worth mentioning in this post.
I know cheap Rope is absurdly strong and already enough to convince people to take it, but you take this perk because it's powerful, not because it's interesting or dynamic to approach, an added ability to this perk would certainly help, especially since all other skills in this category grant 2 abilities (i.e: portable campfires + stronger stories, or bonus healing + new healing item).

I'm divided on the Campfire Enthusiast improvement, since on the one hand making it possible to use as an endothermic seems kind of obvious, but on the other hand Walter gets enough of an advantage in winter and living in the caves that the campfire becoming near-useless on the surface in summer might be intentional.

Really like your idea for the messenger Woby skill, sounds like a good way to make it even better for multiplayer.

I'd really love to see Walter get a papyrus crafting benefit, between the slingshot field kit needing 2 papyrus, and both honey poultice and bundle wraps needing papyrus, something like "Handy Handcrafting" could work nicely for papyrus crafting + Twine Twirler

sounds like something for Wickerbottom, I think it's okay if Walter isn't proficient at making papyrus

mm i hear that, it just bothers me that the Slingshot Field Kit skill says "Learn to craft the Slingshot Field Kit ..." but you still need a trip to the swamp and a science machine for the papyrus, lolsob

That and it'd probably be too good in summer when paired with the cooling of his pinetree pioneer hat skill which gives it 120 cooling which is surprisingly high for a hat considering the other options in the 100s are hats that give you a downside for wearing them or the eyebrella.

i haven't thought about this before so i checked, and yeah https://dontstarve.wiki.gg/wiki/Summer_Items_Filter

- the ice cube recipe is kinda expensive, slows you down by 10%, and gives you 50 wetness point. it perish like a hambat but can be repaired with ice, but that's a rare commodity in the summer though. 240 insulation

- the melon hat is similar to the ice cube, but doesn't slow you down, can't be repaired, and will drain your sanity. i think walter ignores the drain but still, for only 120 insulation that's terrible

- a strawhat is a strawhat. 60 insul

the summer hats are terrible, and if you're playing with friends who want to use the eyebrella, all the more reasons to use the pinetree hat for insul. pinetree hat and panache is underrated

I kinda get the same vibe, but I also don't think people pick Campfire Enthusiast purely with Winter in mind, just like they don't pick Pioneer's Panache purely with Summer in mind.

Pioneer's Panache is great for Summer but even outside of it you get higher wetness protection and higher damage/sanity reduction, so you pick this if you really want to amp up the utility of his hat and plan to use it often.
With Enthusiast you get a campfire and stronger stories to settle down wherever you need, which really seems to feel like a perk for people who move around a lot or play around teammates, but the moment summer hits you'll drop the portable campfire entirely and end up with no alternative besides the usual endothermic fire spam (not counting caves).

An endothermic option would solve this niche about playstyles and add another layer to the item similar to Dwarf Star/Polar Light's applications, freezing and overheating are both equally a pain to Walter since it triggers his sanity drain if you even mess up for a few seconds, so having a survival item that goes unused for an entire season is a bit sad, instead we could double it's utility and make it synergize with Panache.

To be fair, I do think this perk is pretty great as is. But endothermic made enough sense to sound worth considering.

Tbh when I saw the endothermic portable campfire suggestion in a discord server I wasn't really sold, as I feel like spamming endo campfires is probably the only strategy I've never used to deal with summer, but allowing the portable campfire to be useful in summer, and also introduce players (even me apparently) to new ways on how to survive the season would be great.

Also the WHWT suggestion is top, could compete with Wortox's ability to just appear from thin air and res you for pretty much nothing, just at a higher cost of a Life Giving Amulet. Kinda vibes with that "Saint Bernard Rescue Dog" vibe people have been wanting Woby to fill. I'm always super duper for skills that allow you to more effectively carry your noob friends to help them get into the game, nothing grinds a new player experience to a halt more than having 75% of your max health missing halfway into Winter.

I couldn't agree more, i have suggested this somewhere else as well, makes it more worthy of a perk as well as putting some emphasis on his nomad playstyle

Eyebrella gives 240 and ever since that dumb update you can make infinite in the first Winter. At this point with how much they've powercrept the game it isn't Walter's hat being surprisingly good for summer, it's the other hats being surprisingly bad.

Blue amulet, thermantidote, Snow Chester, rain. Endo fires are one of the worst ways to cool off.
