Are we reaching The Forge levels of power?

Recommended Posts

Do you think we are close or we already surpassed the point where most characters feel as if you are playing with The Forge powers and abilities.

Each character with each rework and skilltree seemed to have gotten close to that as time went on.

forge felt powerful for people? I remember feeling like I was fighting with toothpicks because of how downtuned the numbers were compared to regular gameplay (in particular I recall many attacks were in the 20s and 30s and most things didnt break like 50 unless it was something like the magma meteor

I never got to play the forge, but from what I can tell it was used as a “testing grounds” of sorts for Klei’s new game RotWood.. right?

Im excited to play RotWood at some point in the future, but I don’t think DST Skill Trees (& reworks) are quite on par with forge stuff.

I think it’s actually a GOOD Thing for the game for the characters to have new combat abilities like willows fire mage stuff and Werebeaver tail smash, it’s just that DSTs mobs aren’t equally as complex in combat.

Shipwrecked and Hamlet had slightly more complex mob behaviors, and I think that if Klei ever ported those to DST they’d also update existing mechanics to better compliment the rest of the game (I’d hope so anyway…)

Im not sure about PC (it’s broken OP) but I can say that abilities and perks feel limited on Xbox (like how far or which direction Wortox can soul hop to) and those same limitations make the abilities “fun” but not “Broken”

PC version of the game literally gets God Tier Status on certain abilities and things they can do that are just barely doable, or worse not doable at all with a controller.

And yes I DO Take that into account, because if characters are performing better on a particular platform then they do on another- Baseline should be how it feels on the lesser spectrum.

players who can free aim where to Yeet Wolfgang’s dumbells will always have a superior gameplay experience to those who have a fixed direction & distance they can Yeet them.

I hate to constantly keep bringing this type of stuff up… but when it matters, it should be noticed.

being nearly useless on your own because the gamemode was balanced for 6 players was not powerful lol

To play devil's advocate, Don't Starve Together bosses are also made for more players

As someone that loved the forge, no not really. Everything in the forge just felt powerful to do even if technically you couldnt accomplish much alone. In the base game I think most characters just lack the animations and the oomph/gamefeel to really sell that power. Maxwell is kind of an exception and maybe the moose charge/punch. One of the problems is that the basic attack animation just feels really weak and unsatisfying, so no matter how many advantages you tack onto a character you wont get the satisfaction of that jumping hammer attack when you are using any of the basic melee weapons.

-they're not made for 6 players, most bosses crumple with more than 1 or 2
-very few regular enemies are scaled for multiple players (and most of the time that's something like a spider warrior having 400 hp instead of 200); in the forge everything can kill you extremely fast if you don't have multiple players cooperating

yes it is much more pronounced in the forge, but my point was more related to the flashiness of powers that characters received compared to the pre-skilltree era

Yeah I mean well maybe? But do keep in mind that DS was released in 2013.. DST was released two year later in 2015.

it is 2025 now, we are officially on the 10 year anniversary of DST.

Do you really need me to explain what the difference between 10 years is in games and their sequels?

Its like comparing Minecraft or GTA V Xbox 360 Edition to the current up to date versions.

What is my point?? Over time, games adapt to huge changes or they eventually become stagnated & fall out of popularity.

The skill trees may feel weird and unusual to you because you’ve been around since probably the beta phases of the original DS game..

But to me it’s no different from playing Super Mario Bros on the original Nintendo, then many years later: playing Super Mario Bros Wonder on the Nintendo Switch.

New ideas, new concepts, fundamental core foundational changes have to be made to keep people interested.

And if you want my personal opinion, people would’ve been far more accepting of new character abilities and the skill trees if they had been part of the vanilla experience of a brand new DS 2.

I stand FIRMLY by my belief in that because of (insert any other game franchise here that’s ever existed in my 30+ years of existence)

To put it into concept for you: it’s like playing the original very first ever sonic the hedgehog game… which did not even have the Iconic signature spin dash maneuver.

Say what? You swear that sonic 1 had the spin dash?? No you’d be mistaken- Only RE-RELEASES (Aka Remakes or Remasters) ported the iconic signature spin dash into the older game.

And that’s exactly what’s happening with DS and DST.

Prior to Beefalo taming in DST you couldn’t even tame them at all in DS, now you can after an update to the original game.

Like them or not.. powerful abilities and skill trees are here to stay.
