Finally played wortox - a couple of things that drove me insane irl

Hello! Since the release of the update got postponed, I decided to start playing on the beta branch. I never really played Wortox before, so after surviving 20 days while killing Bee Queen, Ancient Guardian, Eye of Terror, and Klaus, I gathered some thoughts as well as suggestions.

  • You can’t maphop (no idea how to call that) while holding the Lazy Explorer, which got on my nerves pretty quickly. Many times, I had to close my map, swap an item in my hand, open the map again, and then teleport.
  • While holding the Lazy Explorer, every right-click will use the staff instead of soulhopping. I must say that this isn’t game-ending, but at the same time, I can’t think of a situation where you would want to teleport with the staff instead of soulhopping. Simply making soulhopping take priority would solve this nitpick.
  • Soulhopping during combat can be finicky when there is a lot of garbage lying around. I admit this could be a skill issue on my part, but it was extremely painful during the Bee Queen fight with tons of flowers and stingers scattered everywhere. When you right-click over an item, nothing happens (which ended up being a death sentence for me). I don’t know if this is doable, but making a “soulhop-to” action that teleports you to the clicked item would make it much better.

Again, I admit some of these might just be skill issues, and I’m not sure if these things can be easily addressed by the devs or if they’re intentional by design. Still, they really kill the flow of the character for me, and I hope something can be done.

have you considered not crafting a lazy explorer then?

unless you found one before your cane..

thankyou for giving your perspective ^^ we have so many people with hundreds or thousands of hours with a character that there isnt much information from someone who is fresh to the character and wouldnt be accustomed to the eccentricities that come with

I keep forgetting to mention the lazy explorer thing! It's annoying.

This happens to me if I find one off Ancient Guardian. I don't craft it as Wortox.

There's a mod I need to get that lets you right click the lazy explorer itself, to turn its teleport function off.

yea its why wortox basically never uses the lazy from AG on autumn 1, best to just ignore it (i just get them for collection purposes)

i agree, its quite annoying when something just lies in a spot (or an enemy) and you cant soul hop. worst case of this is the fw fight, its awful because you do everything in your power to fight the game mechanics like nightmares and pillars/atrium instead of the boss all because caves has a camera height limit very low down, and everything just blocks unless you fight a specific way

(things that just have a bigger detection than they should, especially are AWFUL, means you wouldnt tp for someone's decision to make the detection for cursor to be so gigantic)

Tip: Deconstruct the Lazy Explorer you get from Ancient Guardian as Wortox. It will make you so much less miserable.

I'm honestly not really sure why map teleports have any interaction with your right click state, other than maybe while riding a Beefalo. All this tends to do is mean I can't map teleport while holding a couple of odd tools in my hands (paws?), and I guess I lose the bonus cursor inventory slot? Maybe there's something I'm missing here but it's always been pretty obnoxious and I've never really seen the point of it being the way it is. I guess there's a couple of niche interactions like teleporting in the middle of steering a boat or upgrading the Florid Postern or something weird like that but.... ok. Still not sure why it matters.

This one is giga valid actually

especially against BQ

Woodie's were-forms already have that "item ignoring" thing going on
and I don't see why soul hops shouldn't have it
not to mention nightmare creatures randomly covering my screen :')
not even hostile ones, but hallucinations when sanity is slightly lower

This one is EXTREMELY annoying!!! I've died a few times from this and it's actually infuriating. I pray for the day that Wortox's right click will ignore items.

I think this can be seen as part of the challenge.

As for the issues involving The Lazy Explorer, this is actually something old. It was never an item that Wortox did very well with. I must even admit that I thought that when something like the Soul Jar came to exist, it would be in an item that would exist as an upgrade to the Walking Cane, to be a parallel option to the Lazy Explorer.

I would. Sometimes while I'm mapping with a beefalo I'll want to teleport across a gap without getting off my beefalo. Soul hops leave your beefalo behind, making you wait for them, and also force you to get off, then get back on. This'd sort of kill the only use the lazy explorer has for Wortox.

I was hoping the devs would just make it so you could soul hop on a beefalo.

There must be some convuluted code reason they don't, at this point.

code reason? i think it's more like a visual problem, his teleport isn't  like telepoof where you disappear then reappear at target location. 
if klei implement beefalo soul hop they would have to animate the beefalo and you hopping then animate you and your beef reappearing at target location

This makes a lot of sense, too.

I am also thinking now about a lot of little side things they would have to address. Such as right now, you can't even open a Soul Jar if you're on a beefalo.

It's too bad, I really like beefalo and Wortox. I stopped using beefalo this beta as him because it's pretty clear no work on compatibility between Wortox and beefalo is going to happen.

Oh well, at least we got teleporting with heavy stuff as a compromise.

there is a client mod that replace the soul hop key with my mouse side button, that feature however is a side function, the main function is quite cheaty so i am hesitant on posting it here

Wow that sounds like a bug. Im not sure about all the portable inventories, but Im pretty sure at least the bearger bin and Maxwell's hat can be used on beefalo.
