Nneyk
Ok lets face it: playong walter is borring. His abilities bring litle to no exitment to the game. Every time i pick him i think it ll be different. "He has ranged options , and a free chester and a free beefalo , and no sanity issues and a free cool tent! Itll be so much fun!" And in the end the most exitment i feel is about the tent. Shooting your slingshot isnt really fun as is. Ranged combat in dst aint that fun overall. Even in forge ranged damage dealer would have much more fun jugling cooldown abilities then shooting. Well if not for the gatling gun bug. With clicking>>>speed bug it was exiting actually wich us interesting. But still shooting itself isnt really fun. As well as jugling ammo. You move mouse you click you have new ammo. New skills make slingshot better and more eficient , but it is still absolutely borring. Wobby is in the same boat. Having free chester is cool but by itself isnt fun at all. Having a beffalo from the start with a litle fee is exiting at first , but really not for long. Soon the woby speed stopes feeling speciall. Its your normal speed now after all. Having no sanity drain is sure cool but again not fun in of itself. Training wobby is absolutely pasive exept for one single choice in the begining. After that you dont notice neither the benefits nor the proces. It is almost invisible to the player and hence , unexiting and unfun. Making more different ammo and overall more ammo isnt much fun aside from novelty. Its fun to try out new ammo types but in the end you stick to one or two the best ones and this ability fades into the background too. New slingshot upgrades are cool! But , after some time better slingshot starts to feel like the new default. Like using walking cane all the time , like riding wobby everywhere it loses its novelty and you are not feeling fun by simply using it. And there are barely any ways to have fun with ranged combat in this game! In team fights you stand still holding "f" , sometimes changing amo a bit to debuff the boss or kill off the minions. But you are still standing and holding f. In solo play you have to kite , but with the slingshot most creatures and bosses are kited in the same way. With wobby , i found out , you can kite dragonfly (The boss of hard and quirky kiting) the same way you would kite a tallbird. You just need a 1000 gold rounds to kill it. I honestly tryed and prep time felt fun. With new buffed crafts farming the gold , upgrading the slingshot... Was somewhat interesting! The fight itself... Was so borring i quit after the first 120 golden rounds already were wasted. It was just hours of the same motion. Also walter's affinityes are again , more ammo. Great ammo , cool ammo , but for a very borring weapon. And walter himself makes normal combat (the fun one) very anoying. So you really get sick of him fast. And the skilltree isnt helping. Mayhemms
Ranged combat is definitely not the strongest suit of DST, but if this is what you really strongly feel about Walter's gameplay, then perhaps he is just not really the character that suits your taste. You can always still forego the slingshot and use normal combat with Walter if you wish, while contending with the extra challenge of trying to get as few hits as possible to preserve your sanity. (To be honest you can also just even facetank with him at certain times and just recover your sanity via food/sleep/other sources of sanity gain.) There are also infinite ways to mix up melee combat and the slingshot to create interesting/creative gameplay loops and scenarios with Walter. It's up to you to figure them out for your own playthrough strats as well. It is not (and should not be) always a hold-F-from-range gameplay with Walter. Just like with any other character perk/quirk with the game, his slingshot is also just another useful perk for you to play with and explore the things that it can do for you/help you with/challenge you with while you play. Walter has his own brand of fun, he has his niche capabilities, he has a skill tree that is still very much a WIP but is helping (if a bit slowly) his overall game performance improve, and he is definitely here to stay. Reiko24
I enjoy playing this instance of Walter and ranged combat is interesting for me. This really is just personal preference. As much as I wish he had a different play style that wasn't just slingshot only, or weak base damage on melee + slingshot for utility, I think this is the conclusion I've come to reach, in his current state. He feels fun due to the progression, resource management, and non-Maxwell trapping support he offers, but I could also see him getting a bit old if I played Walter and only Walter forever. He has some pretty fun creative problem-solving going on with him though, and a good opportunity for skill expression too. I feel like he would feel fine in servers that invalidate most challenge in this game to begin with (large ones, modded ones, modified worldgen settings, etc.) I will say, I think that he has great potential for megabasing though. If you have the patience and values to play like that, Walter might actually be for you. Still, that is a fairly small slice of the player base, but I just wanted to point out that he might have a lot of value for those players who never considered him before. I don't do it myself, since I tend to accomplish all I feel like doing by day 500ish, or just boss rush only, but as I played him, I kept finding small ways that he'd excel at it. That i didnt like him that is. I normally dont main anyone and choose a character depanding on what i feel like. With walter i usually feel like i really want to play him sometimes. But then feel , i dont know , pointless? Directionless , thats the word. If i could ask for obe change to the skilltree that gets added , i would ask for the wobby badges to maybe be less passive? No , thats not it. Maybe . Maybe i dont know. I guess you guys are right , but , and i might be super wrong here , i ve seen very litle walter players and even less mains out in the wild , and now am just happy to see that you exist. Thanks for the feedback! (Also i am the kind of guy who is annoyed by walter and wortox getting aoe damage in the same update wendy gets a skilltree. I just really feel bad for abbi) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/162505-walter-skill-tree-isnt-helping/#findComment-1780306 Share on other sites
