How do Remote Workers work?

Recommended Posts

I thought it allowed duplicants to perform tasks from far away. Doesn't seem to be working for harvesting crops? This area is particularly dangerous, especially for Bionic Duplicants which seem to have a lot more trouble getting rid of rads than standard duplicants. I made sure it's got oil and an empty output pipe, and disabled outside access to the area to ensure it can only be done via Remote Worker.

If harvesting crops is just not something it does, then I hope that can be clarified. I looked through the building's description (which uses the words "deploy automatons that operate machinery" and the remote worker's description which says "It performs chores as instructed by a Remote Controller on the same planetoid."

The real insult to injury here was only getting 42kg of steel back when I destroy it. Of all the buildings, why's this one gotta be punishing to experiment with? I'd like it if the Remote Worker gave the full 200kg steel back when its dock is destroyed.

The remote workers require the building to have a remote worker component attached to them in code. Only a limited number of buildings do this; anything descended from ComplexFabricator (so most fabrication-type buildings), artifact analysis stations, seed analysers, beeta hives, ranching buildings, composts, desalinators, Ice-E fans, oil refineries, and oil wells. If it's not specifically made to accept remote workers then they will ignore it. Klei may add more valid targets in the future, and I'm certain there will be mods to add more valid targets.

I see! Thank you for the insight. If the idea is to just have them work on buildings, then I hope these "remote workable" buildings can be listed somewhere in the in-game database entry for the building, because I couldn't possibly remember that list...

Looks this being undocumented is the real issue here.
