Nuclear power banks should be better

Recommended Posts

Power banks seem to work very well, with the Metal power bank being disposable and cheap and with the Eco power bank's life cycle becoming scrap after a lot of use, it's great (I don't know how many use cycles the Eco power bank has, I'm just analyzing the items).

However, the Nuclear power bank leaves something to be desired, it should have more charge (e.g.: 480kj = 4c = 16c with 4 Nuclear power banks) than the Eco power bank but for single use (being made with Enriched uranium in the soldering station).

I imagine the Nuclear power bank as those advanced technology batteries that we use in real life for rovers and scientific experiments outside of planet Earth and it would be great if Klei started adding more mid/late game stuff instead of just early game in the DLCS.

I already posted this somewhere else, so let me just copy it over here:

Actually, nuclear batteries are absolutely incredible. Unlike standard metal batteries, which cost 200 kg per battery, nuclear batteries only cost 5 kg, yet still produce 120 kj power banks. This means that they have a mass effeciency of 24 to 1, so it only takes a single kilogram to produce 24 kilojoules. This is ridiculously effecient, as the most effecient standard generator, the natural gas generator, has a mass energy effeciency of only a bit more than a third of that with the ratio being between 8 to 1 and 9 to 1.

I actually think it only becomes scrap if you drop it in water, but I have not tested that fully yet

I thought the same thing until someone explained to me how nuclear batteries were already super awesome as is. They let you convert uranium directly into power.

They only cost 5kg uranium, while metal batteries cost 200kg.

What does this mean? If you find a large uranium deposit you can produce a nuclear power station battery bank. Build out a ton of those batteries, load them into a battery discharger and now you can power your grid for cheap and for a long time. Hardly anyone i see uses the research reactor for actual power, because by the time you have the tech to build it, you already have high quality power infrastructure. But a Nuclear Battery Power station can be built much MUCH earlier and give you an alternative early energy source. I've always wanted an alternative to coal AND HERE IT IS!

Trying to use regular metal would deplete your metal reserves overnight, but nuclear batteries are way more efficient and last much longer since they can be built for 5kg each. And allow us more uses for uranium. They're great.

Thats not a bug, thats a feature! Now we have another way to make perpetual rad bolt generators without needing weezeworts or downed satellites.

Granted, it wasn't exactly hard to make radbolts originally, but this provides new options!

Radbolts, get your radbolts......

But that depletes uranium over time, presumably the nuclear battery is perpetual.

Heheheh, for the record i'm not serious about using nuclear batteries for radiation, i just think its an interesting mechanic to work with/around/exploit.

That is approx 25 batteries per stack.... image.png.0edc585aecc4864490a982eac9721ba7.png

lol epic.

nuclear power banks are awesome then. They provide early power from relatively unused uranium, and they can be moved with shipping tech so if you can handle very large numbers of them safely and even exploit their radiation properties if desired.

Damn, they might be a bit too powerful, i don't see a need for the research reactor or other radiation machines at all when you got nuclear power banks.

Yep. I sure hope they don't nerf it to the ground. That being said, much like shine bug reactors, anything that is infinitely compressible and emits either light or rads can eventually be exploited in that way so it's not like "fixing" this instance in some way would change much. We already had that with nuclear waste but the fact that those are debris instead of liquid makes it way handier to stack.
