Monkey Curse should have an alternate cure

Recommended Posts

The worst thing about oceans are pirate monkeys, and the worst thing about pirate monkeys is the monkey curse. What makes the monkey curse so unbelievably annoying is the amount of time it takes to remove. If you're out at sea, you have to go back to the mainland and go to the ruins to get bananas, which is ten times more annoying if you have not found them yet, then go back out to sea and find the monkey island.

All together this can take hours to accomplish, and mostly involves running back and forth in circles. On top of this is the fact that the monkey curse removes all character related perks, which can be devastating for any player depending on how they have built their world around the perks and drawbacks of their character. Imagine building your base among a horde of spider dens or merm huts as webber or wurt. Imagine trying to maintain your sanity in the ruins as Wormwood when the only sanity regeneration you've taken into account is planting seeds or sleeping in tents. Imagine farming tons of dark swords and night armor as Maxwell, then losing his sanity perk, then trying to traverse the ruins for bananas with no other weapons or armor and no other sanity regen method.

I suggest an alternate cure to the Monkey Curse. Cursed Trinkets should be able to be given to a splumonkey pod, but this either causes a monkey boss to spawn similar in scale and difficulty to the rabbit king. I imagine a monkey that is now cursed to be extra monkey. Monkey squared. Basically a prime ape or gorilla of sorts. Otherwise I think having all splumonkeys that were spawned from that pod turn unto shadow splumonkeys would be good.

This would greatly reduce the time it takes to cure the monkey curse while not making the monkey queen obsolete.

Another thing you can do is drop all your stuff, die to a lureplant or in an isolated area, and revive yourself, and the trinkets will stay there or get digested by the lureplant

I love exploiting game mechanics, but I would also love to see something that builds on the lore of DST

they made trinkets despawn after half a day after getting dropped through wurt and winona skill tree update iirc, just drop your stuff, die like 5 tiles away from it and get revived

I'm going to defend the monkey pirate implementation.

Yes, the monkey curse sucks, but you have to kill the monkey pirates to get cursed. There are other ways to deal with a monkey pirate encounter that doesn't involve killing them and risking the curse.

- You can let them rob you. If you don't hit them, they will steal from your inventory and dropped items on your boat without hurting you and will leave after taking a few items. You can reclaim a majority of these items later by digging up the treasure spot that spawns on the mainland.

- You can scare them off with a cannon shot. This method requires that you have already appeased the queen and got the cannon/cannonballs blueprints and built them on your boat, but it works great.

- You can outmanuever the monkeys and get the wedges in some seastacks and get away from them without fighting.

My opinion is that if you don't want to deal with the curse, don't get cursed. You have options. If it rains, you don't have to wait until it stops raining to dry off.

i am in for removing the bad game design that is the curse altogether, like, there is no reason ever of why that thing even exist in the first place, punishing you for killing the things that litteraly assault you ON A TINY PLATFORM OF ALL THINGS?!? like is it not bad eought for them to do heavy damage to you and your boat? they probably even stole something from you....like...from all the weird little design choices in this game THIS one is probably were i just HAVE to question if the devs even tested it in the first place and not just thrown in because they had a scraped idea lying around and wanted to implemend it somehow

I actually don’t mind getting cursed, getting raided means you’re close to their bay, it forces you to go check it out and you can plunder their portal, you get bananas that way to remove the curse and you can keep all the other good stuff. It only sucks Klei didn’t make it interesting to be turned into Wonkey. I’d love a questline similar to Pearl’s based on why are the monkeys in the constant, why are they pirates. We could have gotten unique lore from the monkey queen only when turned into Wonkey, she could send us into randomly generated spots at sea and reward us with plenty of goodies only achieved that way. But all we got was a boring locked character behind an annoying mechanic everybody complains about…

Is there a way to stop them from smashing your sails? That's the main problem I have with the pacifist route. Also can they steal from chester?

The bandana is really useful at least

If you let them board your boat, the only way I know of to keep them from smashing your sails is to drop a couple bananas before they board. The monkeys will prioritize taking the bananas over other actions, but it isn't foolproof unfortunately. Also it requires you to already have bananas, in which case you can be a bit more carefree with monkey murder.

I've never tested this myself, but I think they can steal from Chester since they can steal from regular chests. They can't steal from a hold on the archaic boat though.
