We have one more update for the remainder of the year, with confirmation that at the very least there will be new skill Trees. I'm just curious as a vibe check what people think the new content/qol will be, in addition to which characters will get skill trees.

Personally, Survivor-wise, I think the next contenders for skill trees are:

  • Warly
  • Wendy
  • Walter
  • Webber

They've all been the longest without character updates by a decent margin. Of these, I think Wendy + Webber and Walter + Warly. Though I also wouldn't rule out us getting a  batch of 3, with the combo of Wendy+Webber+Walter. I think Hide & Seek as a short could influence the outcome, though I don't know in which way, because it released only a month after Winona got her skill tree. Walter & Webber also got a set of skins in the past update, so their chances might have decreased slghtly assuming Klei is trying to pace character skins.

Edit: Warly is actually due to get a Merrymaker skin this update, and I have doubt he'd get both his merrymaker and archaic in one update, indicating to me that the Pair is Webber&Wendy.

In terms of content, after the last 2 updates focused on Megabasing QOL and Ocean QOL, I think this last update will focus on QOL for menuing and worldgen - viewing/selecting insight out of a world, additional worldgen options, maybe a new Trade in minigame....

Either way, whether it's this week or next, I can't wait to see the intermission.

Walter and warly makes sense to me. They are in dire need of skilltrees and thematically they work together for the short and content that could be updated.

Walter and woby can hunt/track animals to butcher for warly to cook it up!

Adding new surface animals to hunt like giant fat gobbler (which explodes on death to rain berries everywhere), Varghant, beefalo and more.

New cave hunts? New giant worm boss has small chance to spawn, regular worms, hordes of travelling spiders like spitters (makes them renewable if someone destroys all dens) and some new cave unique animals.

Copy and paste over Shipwrecked water hunts for whales or narwhals.

Warly can get unique dishes related to the new mob food drops that have special effects.

Hunting and drying meats both need updates since pretty much every other food related content has been buffed or receive QOL apart from these two.

Yeah, the literal only reason I can think that Warly & Walter wouldn't fit is that Warly's already almost certainly getting a merrymaker skin next update and idk if they'd want to give him two, but even then It's still possible.

QOL around hunting is much needed too. A more reliable way to get feathers for Wigfrid especially.

Hmm that sounds like such a minor reason to not put them together. But with Klei you can never know lol

Ah boomerangs do the job OK. Any early game ranged weapon that has good QOL to use would be a massive nerf to Walter.

His slingshot is super handy for all the wee QOL moments like killing birds, aggroing koalafant, killing mushgnomes/tentacles.

Unfortunately that means no other character should have access to a nice to use ranged weapon atleast not until post-rift.

I hope underrated or overshadowed characters should get their skill trees first, such as Walter, Webber or Wendy.

Webber and Wendy are anything BUT overshadowed.

I personally cant wait to see Maxwells skill  tree, I bet update with his skill tree will be important lore wise.

If we keep in mind the soft pattern that’s occurred with their skill tree choices of grouping survivors who desperately needed it to feel like worthwhile picks over other characters. This could be because other survivors do their thing better or because they were straight up swap characters. (Woodie, Willow, Winona) and survivors who were fine without it but got tons of new toys (Wurt, Wolfgang, Wigfrid), I think we could see a pairing or trio along these lines.

for the characters who need a tree I’d say Warly, Walter, and Wickerbottom (hear me out)

for the characters who are great without it I’d pitch Maxwell, Wanda, and WX-78.

the rest of the characters I feel are somewhere in the middle and may be sprinkled in as the third of a duo or just all be used next update and ruin my whole post.

So I can see something like Maxwell, Wickerbottom, and Wanda with a theme around their knowledge and magical abilities coalescing in some way. I’d prefer Warly, Walter, and one of the just okay characters sprinkled in, Wortox if I could choose.

I think Warly needs a skill tree more than anyone as he’s the last true “Swap Character” You don’t need to physically play Warly to get any of his benefits, a problem that’s only magnified in late game worlds with bundle wraps, Bearger bins, and Icker Preserves.

Now for Wickerbottom. I think she is also technically a swap character in late game worlds. Whenever you get to a point in the game where sanity isn’t a problem and you have everything you need to make all your books and farms, *what reason do you have to not just play Maxwell?* While she’s a much more niche and less severe case than Warly, there still is virtually no reason to play as Wickerbottom in a world where you have all the recipes unlocked and access to the Bone Helm and plentiful sanity foods to make the sanity penalty Maxwell gets from reading wicker books completely negligible. I’ve seen lots of calls to completely remove this feature from Maxwell, but I think a more elegant solution would be to give Wicker her skill tree with enhancements to her books (and new books for that matter) that Maxwell CAN’T use. It would make the King himself frustrated to no end knowing that she’s reached a level of knowledge even he can’t comprehend.

So, in conclusion if I was told to pick the next trio of characters to receive a skill tree without going off of any requirements for a theme I’d pick Warly, Walter, and Wickerbottom! In my opinion they’d be the strongest 3-for-3 glow ups in the game

I am beyond hyped for Maxwell’s skill tree, it may be the final one we get due to how important it has potential to be narratively.

Does he fully side with Charlie? Becoming her Champion of Darkness? Does he side with his fellow survivors, valuing the bond he’s built up with them over the years stuck surviving with them?

Or will the choice be up to us, the players?

My heads been brimming with Maxwell ideas! From giving you a choice in the very first skills whether to side with or betray Charlie, or having Maxwell be a double Shadow alignment to mirror Wormwood’s double lunar..

What new abilities does that entail? New spells? I’d love the ability to summon a shadowy Charlie familiar to act as a mini-boss minion, at the cost of half of Maxwell’s max sanity, or being able to use pure horror to supercharge the codex umbra making its next few uses yield stronger results.. duelists with reapers, servants with mauls.

what about new capabilities for old spells? Let our Servants unlock hammering and rowing capabilities. Give shadow prison longer durability, or have it damage over time.

What if Maxwell did have a lunar tree? Getting to create a new tome that utilizes Alter’s power such as sleep or laser attacks, maybe some kind of defensive or teleporting ability too. I think it would be cool if to rival the Codex Umbra’s abilities around controlling mobs and summoning minions, the Codex Lune would instead focus on purely enhancing Maxwell himself as well as allies, with limited time buffs and direct combat spells!

Maxwell truly has potential for the craziest and most OP skill tree and I’m here for it

I really hope Warly's part of it, but I can't see them doing that if the update's at all Halloween-themed. I feel like Wendy's almost certain to get something either way, though.

webber would be a good match for spooky season but abigail is a ghost soooooo yeah. that being said i am not sure it would be in october however. november has nothing going on so that -feels- more reasonable to expect

my hopes for wx's skill tree are always high, but it's probably gonna be either webber, wickerbottom or wendy. or maybe all three at once. i dunno, i've had a hunch wicker was gonna have one of the next skill trees for a while now, for no particular reason

regardless, can't wait for the intermission animation honestly, those are always so awesome. hopefully wx or webber (or both!) get to play a part in it :]
