Forever Offline
As is with the massage table which duplicants lie upon, it can be set to public use or reserved for a single dupe. This mechanic would expand the possibilities of what we can do and change the strategies players take early game, mid game and still entice people to build private rooms in the mid or late game. Balancing needed: 1) Morale debuff - dupes get a debuff for sharing a bed, if the debuff is higher (let's say -4 morale, shared a bed), it will prevent players building a single bed in the early game, but will work as a space saver in the mid game where morale becomes a bit less of a problem. 2) Private bedroom - a private bedroom will need a requirement of a comfy bed that is not set to public, if one does set it to public, it will turn into luxury barracks instead. 3) Messy mess table - a duplicant will get a morale debuff for sharing a table, (-2 morale, messy table), this debuff name is silly and makes sense, sharing shouldn't be just a mechanic that makes the game easier, and later in the game building a few more mess tables isn't a problem, so it would just make the early game more interesting. The -2 morale works fine, since even if they share a table, dupes get +3 morale from a mess hall and +6 from a great hall. When sharing, even a mess hall will provide +1 morale overall, making it balanced but harder to use in the early game. So that's about it, I believe these changes would make many players happy and would result in some pretty interesting strategies and builds. Have a nice day and tell me what you think! Slvrsrfr
Wish all my first posts looked like this. Welcome! I'd vote yes if it could be used in shifts. And maybe, I suppose, that's the point But, I'm not exactly sure you don't mean as couples? Having two dupes share a cot for 1st-3rd shift just makes sense. But I could also see how it may need some downside to keep it from solely becoming a strat. A temperament check each day doesn't seem unreasonable for -2 morale until sleep time. So some days it bothers them and some days not. I suppose it could be offset by better food, good working conditions etc. I love the idea of the arrows there. But, at least having some mild control so dupes don't put the entire colony at risk, b/c the dev's don't want to spend time programming for another practical assessment by dupes. On the one hand they(dupes) are dumb enough to eat the only remaining meal grub in front of a dying 'friend', but on the other they are fully cognizant of nuclear reactions, thermodynamics, tool & dye, rocketry, fluid dynamics. Structural integrity, formulation of medical compounds. But they can't not piss themselves, or stare dull eyed at their college dying at their feet for want of calories. I can't play games with things that don't even want to survive themselves. The arrows, etc. at least give some level of determinism. B/C it can all pivot on one senseless dupe at 2499cals(or whatever), who feels obligated to snatch up the last morsel. Like even when there is more food to be had from a adjacent plant. I could go on. vonVile
I wish ONI was like Space Haven where beds weren't assigned to a character. When you have work shifts you are basically wasting base space with every Dupe having their own bedroom. If I have 4 shifts with 6 Dupes each that's 24 beds when all I really need is 6. c-lipka
I see the potential for an additional gameplay element: Bedcritters. Bedcritters are effectively a new type of germ, with the following properties: Bedcritters can spontaneously and randomly infest beds, with the probability increasing exponentially the longer the bed is occupied each cycle (regardless whether due to bed sharing or professional dreaming). Severely infested beds in the same room also increase the probability. Once a bed is infested, Bedcritters multiply in regular air (oxygen), and really thrive in stale barracks air (CO2) or polluted oxygen. Bedcritters do not show up on the Germ Overlay (or are easy to miss at the usual numbers involved) and do not trigger auto-disinfect (or only in exceptionally severe cases). Bedcritters spread from beds to Dupes and vice versa. (Clothes and Suits may be additional vectors.) A Bedcritter infestation is very likely to spread among bed-sharing Dupes long before causing symptoms. Any Dupe sleeping in a severely infested bed has some chance of having their sleep interrupted due to Bedcritter Bites, with the usual debuffs associated to losing sleep. The probability increases with Bedcritter count. Any Dupe severely infested themselves has some chance of developing Bedcritter Rash, which reduces morale and overall work performance due to discomfort. Using a Shower, Sauna or Hot Tub helps to both mitigate Bedcritter Rash and keep a Dupe's Bedcritter infestation in check. A Dupe sleeping in their own dedicated bed for the standard 3 "hours" per cycle and taking a shower every other day should never experience any symptoms related to Bedcritters. Alternatively, topical ointments mitigating Bedcritter Rash can be crafted at the Apothecary. Using a Decontamination Chamber will completely rid a Dupe of their Bedcritter infestation. To rid a bed of its Bedcritter infestation, it needs to be disinfected (which needs to be done manually, or by setting the auto-disinfect threshold to germophobic levels). Prolonged exposure to Chlorine gas or immersion in liquid may also do the job. If Clothes and Suits are vectors, there's almost no way other than prolonged Chlorine exposure, or the new Decontamination Chamber. The Ore Scrubber might also work.
