As soon as I realized there were customization options for Gas Reservoir, I promptly recycled pretty much all of my Blueprints in order to unlock Gas Reservoir colors. The prospect of using the solid colors as a visual labeling shorthand is a wonderful quality of life benefit, and I feel like it is ill-fitting of the Blueprints system due to its practicality. I understand that mechanically it fits squarely in the "cosmetic-only adjustment" bucket, but I want to assert that color-coding of storage buildings has significance beyond decorative skins.

There are currently no color options for Liquid Reservoir; consider this a request to add them, even if it's just the same colors available for Gas Reservoir. Take a look at this mockup, where I have used color to label which units contain Water, which contain Polluted Water and which contain Ethanol:

Piece of cake, right? This colony is young enough that I won't be losing track of which is which just yet, but it demonstrates the broader point I'm bringing up. Without this option, especially when storing multiple liquid materials in close proximity, I often find myself clicking on the building and scrolling all the way down to the bottom of the details pane to see what's in their storage. Being able to mark which is which with colors would help immensely.

I'm a nut for hoarding resources as it is, so this idea appeals to me more than I suspect it would affect the normal player. There are seven gases that are stable at comfortable Duplicant temperatures, and I like to collect them like mystic artifacts, placing them onto Pedestals. I often keep Gas Reservoirs of them around as well, because most of them can come in handy for various purposes and using a Bottle Emptier isn't always a great option. Currently, there are lots of choices for using colors to label the Gas Reservoirs.

There's also the default orange color. This has direct correspondence to six of the seven stable gases: Weepy Blue → Oxygen, Ick Yellow → Polluted Oxygen, Default → Natural Gas, Puce Pink → Hydrogen Gas, Mush Green → Chlorine Gas, Faint Purple → Sour Gas. There's no grey one for Carbon Dioxide. I would like to have a grey one for Carbon Dioxide.

That all being said, the polka dot and striped designs for Storage Bin and Gas Reservoir feel like skins to me, so I would say they should remain as Blueprint options. The solid colors feel like functionality.

My suggestion is as follows:

  • Set up Storage Bin, Liquid Reservoir and Gas Reservoir to be color-tintable with a palette selector like Pixel Pack
  • Remove the solid-color storage building Blueprints, reallocating any owned to other random Blueprints of the same rarity
  • Retain patterned storage Blueprints, add a couple for Liquid Reservoir
  • When using Blueprints, the building is not color-tintable
