There's not really a "cheap" consistent way to go about this but fire farms would probably be the way to go it's part of the reason I stick with the lunar path. Not sure honestly I haven't experimented too much with shadow merms but when I did I just tried getting them killed on tentacles which admittedly is very inconsistent. In early game you can just start a merm war in the swamp. If some shadow merms start dying just run and then start chopping/mining to change their actions. that has lead me to around 4-5 shadow merms. wich arent enough for massive deforestations but decent enough for regular fights and mining. (Yeah I know it breaks all the requirements you asked. but I haven't figured out a way to get massive amounts of shadow merms for late game, perhaps try gunpowder?)
