What would a Walani Rework + Skilltree be like?

If there is any DS character they want to brung over, Klei seems most interested in Walani. (I heard)

 

But what will her new abilities be? She will basically be a new character with a rework.

 

Some things to go off of:

  • Was once a chinese pirate (the modern ones that steal stuff from cargo ships). (I dont think they will go much into this because woodlegs is a good character they can return too)
  • Likes surfing.
  • Is a chill gal.
  • Loses wetness faster.
  • Sainity progresses slowly.

Maybe they will make her the true sea Wilson, and give her ocean related transmutations? Nah. Plus, will her surfboard stay the same? How can her skilltree add to it?

Perhaps more players could board the surfboard (the Walani that originally boarded it will be the one to pilot it) and there could be two tiers of surfboards, the basic one you start of with, and a large one.

The basic one fits Walani herself + 1 extra player (or 2 extra players with a skill point?)

The large one fits Walani + 3 other players. (Which the skill point would increase to 5 other players.)

Extra players cannot controll where the surfboard goes and will just hash out a couple of idle lines. The "pilot" Walani dictates how many extra players can go on (no pilot/without extra passengers skill uses base, with the extra passengers skill uses the bonus passengers value). Other players can hop on and hop off of these, but cannot move them.

She could have a skill that allows her to spawn and locate pirate ships with treasure on them more often and double the loot. Aside from that I can't think of much you could do without just retreading already explored ground the main reason I think we won't get more dlc characters is because character abilities are so expansive at this point that there's very little unique design space left which is already probably going to be a issue with the remaining skill trees. 

 

If Klei wanted a cool interesting skill tree for my surfer gal I’m sure I could think up a few neat ideas.

Id start by doing something with the long long ago implemented Shell Bells, perhaps she can pick those up and blow into them like a Beefalo Horn to summon some kind of aquatic mobs to help her? (Like a Gnarwail she named and became friends with)

THEN I’d let her have cool abilities with pearls mostly useless message in a bottles, by being able to do super neat things with them such as store fireflies inside for a make-shift Lantern, or put several things of honey/fistful of jam into them for preservation.

Allow her to safely pick up and collect Seaenemy that she can replace back down like ToothTraps.

You guys absolutely and I mean ABSOLUTELY have to stop looking at Walani as being a “boring” Character, For me- Woodie, Wes & Wolfgang were all boring too until they got Re-Works & skill Trees.

Walani has spent her entire life out at sea surfing waves, so let’s start with that…

This IS DST afterall.

Even in a game called “Together” characters have to have unique roles and perks that only they should be able to perform, I personally would not want other players to be able to ride Walani’s surfboards, because that significantly removes the need for the various types of DST boats, other players can ride their grass rafts.

I wouldn’t want Walani to become to designated Ocean Taxi.

And until other players can ride passenger on Woby (or borrow him and once they hop off he returns to Walter like a bell bonded Beefalo can and will actually do..) 

I don’t want to hear the word “Together”

Sometimes, a character having unique “alone” stuff they can do that still benefits others, can be fun too!

Brooo, major ocean characters like Walani and Woodlegs would be awesomeeeee! :wilson_pirate:
They could benefit from ocean recipes, which use figs, barnacles, fish, kelps, etc. Perks that encouraged them to play in the ocean, as well as special trades with the Queen of Moon Quay, Pearl and Frostjaw, in addition to being able to find special items in the Pirate Map loot; Specific structures to be used in the water would bring a good complexity to the ocean. I love the concept of the Ocean Trawler and I would like to see more of these builds. This is just a starting point for many other interactions that could exist between these characters and the ocean content and its giants.

Answering your question more directly: In Walani's Skill Tree, she could learn how to make special items using Malbatross's feathers; plus accessories for the surfboard, such as fins and leash or even other types of boards (shortboard and longboard, that would have slightly different mechanics). Also, a sunblock that could be used by her and other players to lessen the effects of overheating; A structure to be placed in docks that would prevent wildfire from occurring in a certain area; She would receive no maximum health penalty from being drowned; Ability to see the name of a fish in shoal; Special interactions with the Gnarwail and its waves.

By the end, a new Hula dancing emote.

I want to add a bit more to this, in general I love how most character skills/perks are just Early Access unlocks to items you could obtain through normal means but maybe a bit harder.

Like Woby = Chester & a Beefalo.

Or Winona’s Teleporting Umbrella = Shadow Manipulator tier stuff, Winbot = Wobot.

Or Wes & Woodies cheaper Walking Cane

Or how Wilson can bypass the moon stone event by crafting a moon stone. 

Soooo I want to purpose a pretty crazy suggestion for Walani..

Let the gal have a Strident Trident! It can be like Woodies Weaker walking canes or whatever.

Let it roll ocean waves across stuff, even on dry land.

It would be hilarious, and charmingly cute if Walani could use her Water summoning Trident to Surf a wave on dry land on her surfboard right into an enemy mob.

(Kinda like Poseidon can in Smite..)
