Suggestion: Add a world option for the celestial portal to determine usage

Disclaimer that I like the Portal and character swapping.

Say you swap to Warly for Warly things. Now you just have to do the meatball/meaty stew dance for some more days. Since you’re swapping characters you’re probably in the stage of the world where you have everything you need set up. His downsides aren’t something that will get you killed. So there’s no real risk.

You just switch to him and have to get annoyed (if you are annoyed by his downsides) for all the days that the cooldown lasts.

The same goes for all other characters I think? Because most downsides are manageable in a world with a comfy base and all that. Like switching to Wurt (if that’s a thing): you have had enough time to transplant all the veggie resources you need for her.

I realize your stated point that this is the minimum change to solve the supposed problem. But I don’t think it’s a good one.

A larger change would be to tie it to some new questline:

  • The moon rock is guaranteed on day 1
  • You have to do some mini quest that tests your skills (to whatever degree that the Portal naysayers demand in order to be worthy of using the Portal, but not something crazy like beating CC IMO)

That would be more fun than the current requirement which is just crafting.

Then you also have to do some risk assessment. Maybe you want to “rush” things with a character that is good early game and then switch to some character that is better mid-late game. But you have to weigh that against being good enough with that character to complete the questline.

being forced to play as warly for a year because of wanting to get potato for astroggles would suck, you can just not swap for a year if you want to, no need to force everyone to do that

if they'll simply make the game less fun, yes

I'm actually in favor of making it an option, teeeechnically, you could make a server and someone would use the portal when you forbade it. You could kick them, and I do think it's the server owners responsibility to make those rules clear, but having it outright be an option(that literally no one would probably use) would be a good thing imo.

 

Kinda surprised a lot of people are against adding it as an option, I don't see any harm in it and I seriously doubt it would take a lot of Klei's time to make it an option. If we have an option to change the damage values of monsters, adding a celestial portal toggle seems like a non-issue, no?
