Am I doing something wrong or was this not implemented yet?

It's not useless, it just requires a small amount of user input. I know they mentioned that they were gonna make it attempt to recharge itself when low, but even without that, it's still very useful. Anytime I get back to base from gathering stuff I just drop all my stuff, turn on the WINBOT, and then go do what I have to (crafting, making food, etc). I'll usually make two of them so I don't have to worry about charging it when it's done, and can instead cycle it out when I get back the next time

If you have a normal storage area with mini signs, putting your stuff away to chests takes like 30 seconds. I don't want WINbot to be a useless item that "saves 30 seconds". With such low battery life and no self-recharge, it's only semi-useful for what you have said.
