My unrealistic dreams for wurt's skill tree

Recommended Posts

I've loved playing Wurt for a long time, and don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying her skill tree a bunch. There are a few things that I've always wanted for her though that I don't see in this update, and even if they don't get put into the game, I just wanted to put them on paper somewhere.

  • Merm Merchants (Mermchants)

I love city building, and what I love about this new update is that you have to think about it a little more (what with the zones around the new structures) But I think this would give people more reason to visit town, instead of using it as a place to assemble an army and leave. The merm king can already trade, so it would be cool to see different traders in town. Instead of making multiple Mermchants (which might be tough to code), they could have seasonal trades that change. I wouldn't expect them to be like the traders from Hamlet, there's no need to go into their store, but trades like kelp to ice during summer would be super cool.

You could also have merm bakers, turning useless kelp into unique dishes that you can buy for a price. Not anything overpowered, but cheap crockpot dishes. Maybe they make you a little wet when you eat them to synergize with wurts new wetness perks? There was that whole merm cooking minigame, this would be a really cool nod to the fact that maybe Merms are mysteriously good vegetarian cooks. It would also give people a reason to want to visit Wurt's towns, since right now you pretty much wear the hat to just not die when walking around where she has set up. Maybe there could be an interaction with my next bullet point here, if you don't set up Merm farmers then the Merm bakers have no supply. Maybe that's too complicated, but I love complicated interactions so I'm fairly biased.

  • Automatic Merm workers

I've seen this suggestion throughout the forum in the form of the Merm Fisherman, and I hope that at least turns into a mod. The reason people want this, or at least that I want this, is that it makes Wurt stand out. Wurt as it stands right now, has a fun little city-building game, with the reward for developing it being that you can almost get as strong as Maxwell & Webber. Wurt never really surpasses both of them, combat-wise. Even with the new additions to her kit, Webber has infinite army healing. Something Wurt simply doesn't have, even with the new syringe. Maybe with the merm spawn rates increasing due to the feeding trough, this will change? Large armies that respawn quickly seem like more of a spider thing though, thematically, anyway.

I get that this could get really overpowered, especially in the long run. Isn't that why we play Wurt though? She is a later-game powerhouse, and I think she could find more of a home in the base-building aspect of the game rather than the army general that she is right now. Even if it were just something simple, like the tool shed allowing for merms to pick up kelp from the shoreline and deposit it back into the tool shed, that would change her entire dynamic. Another low-power way of implementing this would be merms rolling around over farms to water them since Merms are slimy. Either that or letting the upgraded tool shed just give them watering cans. They aren't farming themselves in this case, but augmenting your farming capabilities and saving you time. The big difference between Webber's spiders and Wurt's Merms is that Merms are more intelligent (not by much). it would be really cool to use that to our advantage in ways that aren't available to other characters, instead of Wurt trying to emulate other characters and just not being as good as them.

  • Other unit types

I understand why they didn't do this. It's because this is a niche already filled by Webber. If you want different attacking unit types? Go for Webber. If you want tanky minions? Go for Wurt. It's always been something I wanted, but if anything were implemented I'd prefer the last bullet points instead of this one. This itch would be scratched for me if they just added different skins to Merm Warriors, I'd 100% pay for that.

I also appreciate that they did this for shadow and lunar merms, which is by far one of my favorite additions. Great job on this front Klei.

Anyways, thanks for reading. Some part of me hopes that maybe a suggestion of mine makes it in, but I made this post in large part because I wanted to get it off my chest. What do you guys think?

Honestly it would be a dream, but highly unlikely. Wurt being a compact fish hamlet would make her one of the most unique characters in the game.

Then again, a possible future follower update might give Wurt.. a 4th or 3rd chance?

I hope they add more to pigs too.

think he is saying we can all just go play hamlet, which I get. I can't play hamlet with my friends though, and that's why I play dst.

i doesnt outright have to be hamlet, just give her 2 new houses for 2 utility merms and wurt mains will start figuring out the aesthetics themselves
