Those Giant hands! (artstyle)

Recommended Posts

Is it just me, or do the characters in dst sometimes have ridiculously oversized hands? I mean.....I can't remember ever noticing the hands bothering me during any animation in DS. But since I discovered "emotes" in Don't Starve together and the skins-selection-menu, I can't help to actually be /bothered/ by how giant hands seem to look in some animations. I can only guess the reason for it being to make emotes more noticable to other players. Though then I wonder why e.g. Wigfrid's hands turn giant in her "singing failed" animation. It's probably nothing that needs to put emphasis on her hands to get the message across.

If I am wrong with giant hands only be a thing in DST then I'm sorry. I probably haven't noticed in DS so far as I haven't spent nearly that much time looking at sprites.

(despite everything DS/T has my favourite artstyle of all video games ever. It's just a detail that I never got over with and that I desperatly try to fix for my mod-character atm.)

If you want to rationalize it, think of it as wigfrid bringing her hands closer to the camera. Her hands don't turn giant. It's just perspective.

Perspective makes sense indeed, perspective does a lot of weird things to anatomy indeed *shivers from my non-proportional custom character's starving alert face disortion*. I can live with the perspective thing, for default characters, although it's always a pain for me to look at but I will definitely try my best to remove the perspective hands for my mod character as much as I can...if though so far that means the opposite effect (ridiculously small hands). Let's hope there can a balance be found somehow.

I have been working in the field of 2d animation for many years, and unlike 3d animation, we have a lot of different memes when working with perspective)

When I started working in my first animation studio, one of my mentors said: "If the drawing doesn't look exactly like the truth, it's just a perspective"

Ah it's actually why I prefer looking at 2D artstyle over 3D artstyle as well. For me it's usually often the stylized weirdness which provides the special charm. My negative feeling on the hands in this case actually have been surprising me as well, since I usually feel positive when an animation looks funny. I suppose the "emotes" (and later skins) caught me off-guard, causing me to pay way too much negative attention to the hand detail.
