GENESIS

WHO?
I'm Peuchy, a pretty average player but passionate about games since I was a kid (yeah, I haven't grown up much). Naturally drawn to video games, especially simulation games, I found my Holy Grail in ONI. I've played almost all the Klei games too. I played a lot during the beta and spent a lot of time on the game's thermodynamics back then.

WHY?
Even when I was playing the beta, I made my own little charts by hand. But it had its limitations. So, five years ago, I started thinking about the relevance of such a tool. And since I started playing ONI again, I realized how difficult it was to find reliable data on just one site (even in the in-game database). By getting closer to the French ONI Discord, I realized the extent of the work that needed to be done and saw a good opportunity to initiate the project.

HOW?
It was on this Discord (in French, the link is on the Contact page of the site) that I met @stl, who made this project possible. Not being a coder, he found me this open-source application https://app.diagrams.net which allows me to make all the flowcharts. He also showed me how GitHub works, where all the .html and .drawio pages are hosted, which will allow the project to be resumed. If this project exists, it's literally thanks to him.

METHODOLOGY

DATABASE:
The methodology is simple: compare databases and, if there are discrepancies, confirm through tests in debug mode. The sources include:

It would have been interesting to establish a comparative table, but the additional workload discouraged me.

FLOWCHART:
I start with a particular element and link it with all its possible interactions. Then, I see if other interesting elements can be connected to it, and so on. It's worth noting that my diagrams are primarily based on a thermodynamic perspective, although another perspective could be equally relevant.

Overall, I always try to place inputs at the bottom or left and outputs at the top or right to maintain readability and coherence as much as possible.

There are also separate versions for Vanilla mode and the Space Out DLC, as the destinations and space engines are different.

WHAT'S NEXT

DATA CONSOLIDATION:
I hope to receive as much feedback as possible to test the data. My data miner and I have put a lot of effort into this and would like the data to be as robust as possible.
For example, during numerous tests, I accidentally discovered that dehydrated food packets could be removed from their packaging without rehydrating them, simply by applying a little heat. The plastic of the packet reacts normally and turns into liquid Naptha.

INTEGRATING CONSENSUS SETUPS:
For each page, if possible, I would like to integrate setups that have a consensus or are simply functional if they are the only ones available. It can be quite daunting to navigate through this ocean of setups for a new player. I'm not sure if there is an established list already, but if there is, I would love to get my hands on it!

CRITTERS SECTION:
I'm not yet sure about the best approach to tackle this issue, but I already have some ideas.

OTHER IDEAS:

  • I've heard that it's possible with a bit of JavaScript to create fields that could calculate recipes based on data entered by the user. That would be really huge, but unfortunately, I don't yet have the skills to achieve such a feat.
  • I've also received feedback from the French community that a search field could be useful, but unfortunately, with the tool I'm using, I don't have the ability to do that. I would need to update my knowledge of HTML and CSS and completely redo the menu. It's an idea, but it will also take some time.

FUTURE DLC:
I don't know how the future DLC will work, but if my data miner is still available and motivated at that time, I would love to integrate it into the diagrams. This will likely take priority over other projects

COMMERCIAL MODEL
Donations. The site is completely ad-free, and the project is open source under the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 3. Donations will primarily cover the maintenance costs of the server, but I wouldn't say no to a little extra :D

Indeed, the site is far from perfect, but I hope this tool will be as enjoyable for you as it is for us, and that this beta is just the beginning of the project :)

Onicharts.com: First Update
Hello everyone,

I am very happy to present to you this first update of the Oni-charts website. It is mostly a QoL update with some fixes.

Here is the changelog:

  • Larger Elements menus
  • Added tooltips to the Elements menu
  • New icon for the Grugfruit plant
  • Added links to the following tooltips:
    • Volcanoes/etc
    •  Asteroids
    • Geotuner (Volcanoes/etc)
  • Added some relations: Asteroid --> Element
  • Reorganized resources available on asteroids by the state of matter (gas, liquid, and solid)
  • Display of renewal rates in kg/c for asteroids
  • Fixed feeding of pips
  • Fixed feeding of critters babies
  • Several spelling and numerical corrections

I'm still working on the Critters section. I’m diving straight into the Divergent ones!
At the same time, I might have an opportunity to implement a search bar. I would also like to integrate thermal unit conversion.

Feel free to give me your feedback via the contact page.

Cheers!
