Moonstorms: do you leave them on and how do you deal with the gestalts?

Recommended Posts

In my last Wigfrid run, I rushed the moonstorms and kept them on for nearly a year (Celestial Orb took its sweet time), and honestly, it was heaven, nights perfectly lit up, no extra light sources needed... except that I turned on the rifts at the start, so I had Brightshade Helm to avoid the gestalts, as it is hard to stay at anything but max sanity with Wigfrid.

Now, given the same scenario but without the rifts turned on, how the hell would one deal with the ill effects of moonstorms? They're kinda easy to activate by day 35-40 and very adventagous for Wigfrid, but killing CC often happens very late. While most characters can just benefit from them by staying at less than 50% sanity, that isn't all that easy with Wigfrid, even if one eats raw meat and has The Lazy Deserter built.

So, my question is twofold:

1) Do you tend to leave moonstorms up for the infinite full moons?

2) Do you just ignore the downsides and take the occasional hit from gestalts, or is there a technique I'm not seeing?

use bone helm/enlightened crown so gestalts don't target you

Yes and no, I only activate the moonstorms when I have the orb, after that, I rush the CC so I can have a happy life. (Or I just forget to un-deal with them)

Also, Iike to kill the shadow pieces every new moon, so it delays that too.

Celestial crown. (You can also use a bone helm)

And assuming neither one of those are in play yet?

You can build lazy deserters to lower your sanity or eat raw green mushrooms

I dont think is worth having moonstorms active without the celestial crown

getting enough stuff to summon CC requires only a few days and during that time you can just cope with gestalts or use bone helm or play as maxwell or use green shrooms ig, celestial orb RNG sucks so i just spawn it in if it didn't spawn on it's own by the time i got everything else for summoning CC

Yes, I only kill CC again whenever I need more shadow atriums. Usually I play with my boyfriend, so right after we kill CC one of us go kill the shadow pieces with winona catapults so we farm a lot of hearts. After killing the shadow pieces, we activate the moonstorms again.

Yeah, we just ignore the downsides. They're not a big of a deal for us, moonstorms seems to avoid our base and gestalt don't annoy us that much.

I'm on day 150 on my current world and the celestial orb hasn't dropped yet. I had enough time to kill fuelweaver 3 times already. The game is on a permanent full moon since day 55.

I dealt with gestalts equipping dark swords while on a beefalo and repairing dreadstone armour too. If my sanity went up too much I just ate kelp. You can probably farm green mushrooms if you have the living logs too but I wouldn't recommend it.

The best way to deal with gestalts is dodging and ignoring them.

I generally prefer to leave sanity near the middle. It looks as if it were any full moon.

I don't remember exactly, but using Brightshade Helm also predicts the attack with high sanity.

If you find this easy, I think killing Fuelweaver or Shadow Werepig for their hat shouldnt be that hard then.

Eh, "relatively easy" might have been a better choice of words, especially compared to day 11 moonstone event - I don't even tend to finish my ruins rush by then, it's insane some people can pull that off.

Getting pearls stuff isn't all that hard to do by day 30-40 or so if you focus solely on that (though cookie cutters are very luck based), and doing the moonstone event on day 31 is perfectly viable. After that, you pretty much only need to carry the pieces and kill CK with 40 killer bees. Doesn't leave all that much room for killing other bosses though, but doing that in spring with a Charged Elding Spear is much preferable anyway.

The only problem I have with killing AFW or Nightmare Werepig early is how the former one is a waste before clearing the ruins completely (even though Wigfrid has the least need for ruins stuff) and the latter is pretty much pointless if you can just spam Battle Helms.

Probably gonna just leave the rifts on next time too, because there doesn't appear to be any other great way, and while the new gear gives the player some great QoL solutions, lunar hail during boss fights have screwed me over enough times to say it's more than balanced.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

dreadstone helms have 90% absorption though

you can deconstruct lures that crabby hermit gives to you for completing tasks to get shells and dupe them using cookie cutter helm

Holy hell, never even heard of that, but this is amazing. Checked it out, the baits indeed drop a single cookie cutter shell when deconstructed... still, it would eat through nearly two deconstruction staffs and one construction amulet, not a cheap method by any means. Thanks for it, I'll keep it in mind, though with Wigfrid, getting salt for a Salt Box is also mighty useful.

Indeed, but Battle Helm are enough and extremely convenient. Wigfrid's innate damage resistance turns it into essentially 85% absorption, and with the health steal, it feels like how Dreadstone Helm works for other characters. Charged Elding Spear also makes kiting even easier, I don't think I've ever used any healing with her outside of boss fights.
