~ Adding "Pockets" to Clothing Items ~

Recommended Posts

The big problem is that almost nobody uses clothing items, because backpacks are just to amazing.

If Klei adds "pockets" that will give you slots to clothing items, the backpack problem wouldn't be as severe.

x 60 insulation items or other effects give 2 additional slot (Dapper Vest, Belt of Hunger)

x 120 insulation items or other effects give 3 additional slots (Summer Frest, Rain Coat, Breezy Vest)

x 240 insulation items or other effects give 4 additional slots (Puffy Vest, Hibearnation Vest, Floral shirt)

Depending on the insulation factor, how hard it is to craft the item, how useless the item is right now or how strong the passive of the items is, more or less pockets get added.

How often are you building and using those things?

Exactly!

Better than simply making the game more casual by adding nasty mods

In uncompromising they added this (idk if the mod has this feature, was years ago) and made me use body slot more often

Interesting I didn't know that uncompromising did this allready, I want to use clothing items, but I am usally 2-3 slots short and it annoys me so much that i use just the themal stone and a backpack. For me  personally it doesn't even need many slots.

I agree but i don't get why pockets are based on insulation. It should be based around the item.

Yes thats correct, the insulation thing was only the base of the idea. Like some kind of tier system. While Breezy Vest and Puffy Vest both have 240 Insulation, the Breezy Vest is harder to craft and should have more slots. I totally see your point man.

Maybe for example the belt of hunger has 6 slots, but can only hold food, and the hibearnation vest has 2 slots that can hold anything? The hibearnation vest always felt like it outclassed this item.

Makes sense. I still wouldn't use them.

I'd imagine this is how it'd go if these were added in a future update:

Klei: We've made it so clothing items have extra inventory slots, allowing you to carry a few more things while staying warm/cool.

Playerbase: ...There's not enough inventory slots. I'm going back to using a backpack.

Jokes aside, if most players aren't willing to give up their backpacks, adding extra slots to clothing items won't make them switch as I'd imagine they'd want to carry as many items as they can.

Clothing items aren't useless or in need of buffs, some players just value extra inventory space over protection against the elements and are okay giving them up. Blame the player, not the game.

Also with the items fall out when you uniquip it?

I don't think this is the real answer.

The fact is - equips usually cover 2 things, armor or seasonal effects.  Both of these are available for head and body slot.  Armor is only needed when you're actively fighting, so most of the time you run with a head slot for seasonal and that's it.  No matter how many pockets you put in a puffy vest I still don't NEED the armor on right now in base so my head slot will be a beef hat and my body slot will be a back pack.

Even if I do want armor on full time, like say I'm Wanda hanging out in old age and super paranoid about taking a stray hit.  I put armor on my head, a backpack on the body slot and... a thermal stone to cover heat.  Add an umbrella if its raining.

Lets look at a situation where you probably want 2 different clothing items equipped at once - moonstorms.  You probably want a potato hat to remove the slow and visual effects, and a rain coat to take advantage of the gleams recharging your potato hat and not taking damage right?  You still bring your backpack to the moonstorm event.  You just drop it and put on the rain coat while you're there.

So really - ppl will always run around with backpacks and swap them out only for the small time where they might need 2 equip slots, but then pick it back up and go on.  Adding 2 or 4 pockets to a seasonal gear won't change this.  It doesn't need to change either.  Its fine that a player can have a backpack, but drop it to equip armor or whatever else they might need for a bit, then pick it back up.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I don't use backpacks much at all.  I use one in first autumn for exploring / ruins, and once I put down a base I leave it.  I don't touch it again unless I'm doing something like clearing a lot of logs, stones, etc where I will be filling the whole thing with resources to reduce trips.

BUT

You know what got me to stop using a backpack?  Magiluminescence.

Speed and light at a cost of nightmare fuel.  This is unavailable for head slot so I'm forced to choose between it and the backpack.  Any time I'm traveling that move speed helps, which would leave my backpack behind.  So I don't take one.

Its not hard to adapt your inventory.  Most people are carrying things they don't really need.  Once you have a reason to not wear a backpack, you'll find out what inventory spaces were wasted all along lol.

No.  Extra pockets are not the answer.  Always useful body exclusive items are the only thing that can challenge backpack.  Anything situational would only be used for that situation (and already is, ppl do swap out backpacks for body-slot gear when appropriate.)

Go ahead and test this yourself.  Just stop wearing a backpack and see what you fill that slot with.  Odds are you will just add armor when you aren't even fighting...

why don't you use puffy vest and beefalo hat though?

this would imply not being able to carry them in your inventory anymore which would just make them less useful overall even with a few inventory slots

also the rain coat isn't useless, it's on par with the eyebrella and better in certain scenarios, you not using it doesn't make it useless; the breezy vest is just not worth crafting because it only has 60 insulation when it should have at least 120, extra inventory won't change this, meanwhile the floral shirt is just not convenient to craft and has a dumb spoilage mechanic; the problem with the puffy vest is that the beefalo hat is just outright better and is legitimately good enough, you don't need to wear both and there's also the problem of having no synergy with the thermal stone which is what most players prefer using since it doesn't need to be equipped

I could go on but the fundamental problem is that the items just aren't convenient to use, those problems would still exist if backpacks were entirely removed from the game

Do you find much value in dedicating 2 equip slots to insulation?

I'm not sure the math behind it, but I don't feel uncomfortable re-heating on the go with just a beef hat.

better than using one of them for armor while not fighting anything at least

player's innate insulation is 30, both puffy vest and beefalo hat add 240, so wearing both if almost twice as good

still doesn't mean that it's useless, you might want to use head slot for something other than eyebrella without having to use umbrella sometimes, so you use rain coat

I use it to protect from lightning effects, like hammering mgoose eggs, fighting electrified volt goats, or in moonstorms b/c I usually want another gear like armor or potato hat equipped at the same time.

I think I've used it when I had to fight in heavy rain.

Probably useful if you want to dip into the caves while its cold + rain.

Ah, I see what you're saying.

If we're looking at beef hat + (vest / magi / backpack) in the downtime between fights the advantages of the vest only show up if we're definitely going to need to stop and re-heat on the way.  If we can reach our destination without reheating on just the beef hat all we did was waste durability on another item.

I guess it depends on how long the journey is, and whether the magi saves more time then the extra insulation buys.

I've never wanted to. I always walk around with a backpack. If i'm fighting during rain i'll equip a log suit for the moment.

Good idea.

Doesn't eyebrella do the same. I know for the moose egg and lightning  it does but i forgot the rest.

I edited my post but after this.

Its because I usually want another thing equipped.  Armor for fighting mosslings or goats, and potato hat for moonstorm.

I guess with the glommer signal you can get unlimited eyes to just make eyebrellas everywhere, but I still see value in body slot lightning invul b/c head armor is easier and potato / desert hat is unique effect for hat slot.

there are also beefalo and walter

that forces you to have logs or wood armor which are less useful than rain coat and you can't use eye mask or dreadstone helm when fighting that way though

In which way exactly? As far as i know rain coat doesn't have  80% dmg reduction.

Eye mask is good but i usually just make football helmets which is basically head logsuit. And dreadstone helm i never use cause i have crowns around also i can manage without head amor in rain. For late game i can do with night armor i don't need those fancy smeckles.
