Who do you think the next skilltrees are?

I don't know how they pick which characters to go with but I'd probably do it according to how popular the characters are among players. For example, if I went with Wendy or Wigfrid I'd likely pair them with the least played/popular characters to keep it balanced, such as Wes or Wurt. These stats are from 2020 and don't include Wanda but I don't suspect they'd be much different today.

With the last skill tree update they picked 2 of the more played/popular characters and one not so popular character. If they keep with this pattern you may see a couple characters from the top of the list and then one or two from the bottom thrown in.

Oooh that IS an interesting way of theorizing potential future additions.

I think Wormwood is less "less popular pick" and more "DLC survivor pick" - the three DLC survivors listed are at the bottom, behind Wes.
Interesting that both Wolfgang and Woody were chosen but NOT Wendy or Wigfrid.

From this I think Wurt is almost guaranteed a lock, Webber and Winona being the other two perhaps? or maybe Winona and WX?

Edit: I'm always editing my posts when I either get new information or I'm just dissatisfied with the final result lmao. I should probably just make new posts instead of editing old ones to keep it less confusing.

Willow's follower that can attack shadow creatures isn't even that good. 2000 HP with no resistance or regen isn't very much when a Terrorbeak does 50 a hit, has 400 HP, attacks every 1.5 seconds, and there can be multiple of them. Take it into the nightmare cycle and it dies, use it regularly and it dies within a few days, but if you go Moose Woodie in nightmare cycle, you're almost certainly coming out at over half HP and getting a ton of fuel out of it, then clearing half the ruins. A weremoose idol is something Woodie can craft super easily and allows him to solo kill any enemy in the game (yes, including the Ink Blights) other than certain bosses. Bernie, meanwhile, requires that Willow either has a Wilson on her team who shaves or that she goes insane and kills a bunch of rabbits for beard hair and also shaves a beefalo.

Walter's early-game perks are decent, yeah, since he basically has Chester and a riding-only beefalo for next to free, but his slingshot's underwhelming and you'd honestly be much better off never riding Woby and just taming an ornery beefalo. The reason? You can take any non-ranged hit for basically free while mounted on a beefalo as long as you don't take more than a thousand damage (so you do still need to kite, but only really against bosses or huge hordes; you're fine to tank a rook or two), but taking a hit as Woby both damages you and makes you vulnerable to more hits. Plus, an ornery beefalo (especially with a war saddle) is just straight-up going to outdamage his slingshot even with the best ammo.

Winona is a swap character by nature and sucks early-game since she needs a bunch of gems. Most people who play her just build a couple catapult farms and then switch off her since that's her one trick and anyone can power her generators.

I think this is outdated. Wormwood and Wurt have 100% went up after changes and community realisation, same as Maxwell ect.

Either way here's what appears to be the current one, with me editing the names in.

Most notably Wanda Jumped up, as have the new skill tree characters. Warly and Walter have fallen behind too

It does, the UI is just confusing. 

half the names are on the left side, half are on the right side, to avoid the text overlapping onto eachother I guess.

I believe the "Count of Characters being played" is for characters that are currently being played, because it changes often when you update the page. So it's not really a good indicator of what characters are the most played over a longer period of time for more than an hour or so. The author didn't really add an option to select a wider time frame.

The best option seems to be the attached chart where you can see the amount of each player being played over the past week. You can select them to filter out the ones you don't want to see. I looked at each one and noted a rough estimate of their usage range over the past 5 days. Maybe one day I'll look at the code that is shared on github and see if I can get some data from some wider time frames of more than 5 days. Like 1 month, 6 months, a year, and so on.

I unironically hope Willow is amongst the last to get skilltrees. Would make up for Klei rushing out a crusty refresh meanwhile Wickerbottom and Maxwell just casually becomes the strongest characters in the entire game.
