Wx Circuits are great but poorly balanced

You can use volt goat milk

Yeah, or a Winona generator, but those are both extremely limited. Your world might only have six voltgoats in it and they take time to regenerate and the milk spoils, and you have to kill at least one of them for a horn for a morningstar first to charge them on demand. As for Winona generators, who actually plays her? Almost nobody.

Lightning rods can also charge which you can use a telelocator staff to trigger lightning or end is nigh

Alright be real here, nobody is going to do that to save 8 uneeded minutes. Only in Spring if there happens to be a rod.

The lack of circuit slots is a real pain really, hope that changes when their rework is up tho. While I like many of them I only pick like couple of those circuits cause more than half of them don't contribute to me much.

I think the circuits are mostly fine enough as is. I know how easy it can be to just stick to speed and night vision, but in my eyes those two in particular can be covered through other methods later on like beefalo or the enlightened crown for example. So in terms of variety I think for the most part it's just a thing of mindset and playstyle which ones you use more than others.

As for durability and energy, I feel like a lot of people approach the circuits from a bit of a wrong angle (which isnt to say anyones opinions are invalid, just hear me out). Circuits are (outside of a few exceptions) less tools to switch between at a moments notice, and more character perks/builds that you can swap between, at least in my opinion.
Most circuits provide some sort of a stat boost that is often times most useful for passive gameplay. What I mean by that is, the circuits don't provide any benefit in situations such as combat or active tasks like chopping trees or mining, outside of maybe having higher stat margins. My point here being that you wouldn't need to switch very frequently between different builds, meaning you'll mostly keep the circuits you like using more permanently for longer amounts of time.
The most situational that circuits really get is the two/three(?) seasonal circuits, as well as the chorusbox circuit, if only because listening to ragtime ad infinitum is not a fate anybody but maxwell should ever go through. The two/three seasonal circuits are important to note though however, as they are for the most part pretty explicitly tied to seasons, which will stick around for prolonged amounts of time, so you probably won't be switching off of say the thermal circuit during the middle of winter, and thus won't need to really craft new ones too frequently. As for the energy they require, unless you switch out your entire build this won't come too much into effect in ways that are too impactful, since taking off a circuit only depletes charges that the removed circuit would have required.
The two things that I would like to mention however is that, while I just went on about how I think the circuits are probably meant to be used and how the durability and energy isnt too bad as a result, I can absolutely understand the durability being a concern when combined with the my next point.

The slots are absolutely limiting. While I personally was never too bothered by it because I value a few stats over things like nightvision or speed, 6 slots is pretty small for how many pins some of the circuits take up. And i think this is mostly where the problem lies in a lot of ways. Almost all other circuit mechanics hinge on the amount of slots you have at your disposal and this is definitely the part I'd personally consider would be in most need of a change (which probably will come in form of a skilltree at this point). Even 1 more pin would open up a lot more freedom to experiment and just in general have more bang for your buck, with 2 slots or more making the sky the limit (Plus it would allow for 8-bit jokes which is fine by me). I think if wx were to receive more circuit slots, it would probably address most other issues people have with the circuits.
