Surviving on Moon Quay

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd challenge myself to survive starting the game with c_gonext("monkeyqueen") after only managing my inventory.  Maybe a 100-day challenge, but so far I think my record is day 2 or 3.  I've done the best so far with Wigfrid because she comes with helm and spear so she can kill enough monkeys to become Wonky so the powder monkeys allow her to accumulate inventory.  Walter fared well because he could stash things in Woby to avoid being robbed.

But without any flint (or gold), there's no Science Machine and it gets kinda boring without any crafting.  I could modify the challenge to start with 10 flint or gold or 2 electrical doodads and 10-20 foliage to slow down the initial monkey theft long enough to use them?  Just cheat a science machine into existence on the island?

One thing that seems to make a big difference is how many monkey huts are right near the Unnatural Portal.  The further away, the more often you can grab things as they come out.

Anyway, I'm open to thoughts/suggestions.  If Klei made the unnatural portal spit out the occasional flint or gold, that would be huge.  I played with no grass tufts or twigs for a while and the tumbleweeds became so valuable, that the Dragonfly desert was the only sensible place to base!

I personally did this challange but allowed myself 5 days on the mainland, to gather things and avoid the 'no flint' snorefest.

I'mpretty sure you can also just pick Wilson and use his transmutation skills to turn rocks into flint

Speaking of challenges you should try donut worlds one day, you basically put a boat on the middle of the donut which is a giant circle of water and then you make a boat base that basically has all biomes accesible by the sea

TIL that pirates don't raid Wonky - they row away once they see who you are.  Right now I'm essentially playing, "Escape from Moon Quay Island" with a fair amount of cheating (life-giving amulets).  My rule is that I can only build on Moon Quay Island.  Just found the mainland on day 13.

Learning so far:

  • Probably best to leave 1 or maybe 2 distant monkey huts as a meat source (I burned the rest).  I'm spending too many days chasing birds for seeds so I don't starve.  I can't afford to give bananas to the queen - I need the food and health too much!
  • Much as I wanted to leave the lightbulbs and monster meat in the water to make rot, the fish ate it.  That rot for more banana bushes would have been a huge leg up, but now it's gone.
  • The first piece of driftwood is also huge.

Made it to day 100 as Wigfrid, though I spawned a few life-giving amulets in the first 14 days.  I just didn't build anything on the mainland.  Some improvements were 10 grasses planted, a spider den at the farthest end of the farthest pier, 2 pig houses at another end, and a tooth-trap field all around the portal.

The best starting inventory for this challenge might be 10 rot, 10 gold, 10 flint and 10 grass tufts.  If monkeys steal them, can you get them back?  Then the choice of whether to use the boats.  I think most characters would need them to escape the monkeys at some point.

A convenient, central base however is *much* handier than rowing back and forth to the island all the time!  I have a crock, fire pit, and lightning rod on my boat, but the 4 crocks around a fridge at the main base are much better, and there's always something to prototype at the Alchemy Engine.
