Lunar Hail [Visuals and Optimization]

Recommended Posts

Hiya! I am LOVING lunar hail. (But I love Rain World too, so rain events that absolutely demolish me isn't a new like of mine :) )

But I think it's a little teensy bit clunky in some parts, visually and efficiency-wise. So I'm just gonna pass over some things!

It infinitely falls

This is noticeable most on the ocean, but you can see that it just, infinitely falls until disappearing out of thin air! Which looks a bit ugly and really disorienting in full honesty.

It plainly cuts off when hitting the ground

This one is a bit less noticeable but I personally notice it. Similarly to the issue above, it just cuts off when hitting the ground and goes through. Looks a bit strange, and I think it could stand to be changed (Maybe it just sticks into the ground instead of falling through?)

It's REALLY laggy!

It's really darn laggy! And this is due to the shattering drops on the ground

Not the falling hail itself, as that makes use of the particle engine which is extremely efficient compared to the usual AnimState component many things use, but the drops do and are very plentiful. Mostly due to how they'll linger for a whole seven seconds while regular rain drops disappear near instantly.

I get why, the little speckles of glass on the ground as lunar hail occurs looks gorgeous

I think it would be beneficial to move away from using conventional animations and opt for the dropped glass to be made using the particle engine too however.

You guys actually have a really good example/template of something like this too! With the confetti fx from The Fool Cane skin!

Something similar to this might do wonders for getting a much better optimized hail while retaining the wonderful speckles of glass on the ground for a little while.

Excited to explore the rest of this update much deeper, just wanted to get this post out quickly.

Cheers!
