A personal suggestion to the officials

Dear "Don't Starve" team,

I am a player who really likes the game "Don't Starve" (with a total game time of over 2000 hours)

I propose adding a mode selection option in the existing game, which is different from the existing difficulty selection. I mean selecting whether to enable or disable local mods.

For example, there could be three modes: completely disabling any mods, completely disabling local mods, and the option to add some mods (including local mods and server mods).

The reason why I have this suggestion is that I recently saw a regrettable thing on the Chinese internet. China's largest Don't Starve public welfare server "饥荒小分队" was forced to close due to malicious damage behavior. Many people took advantage of the convenience of local mods to destroy others' game experience and publicly mocked them. I also thought of the official Ragnarok event, which was also due to someone using mods to cause some unfairness. Since then, there have been no similar events. Personally, I feel that the fundamental reason for this situation is the conflict between ordinary players and competitive players. Mods themselves are not a problem, but for a competitive game, it is equivalent to cheating. Therefore, I hope to separate players who play competitively from those who play casually by completely disabling local mods.

In my opinion, games with competitive elements attract more players and make people who love games invested more time. Therefore, I hope the official team can create a mode that ensures competitive fairness.

What's that? I've never heard of some KLei official event named like that. Only KLei events are the seasonal ones ("Year of the..", Midsummer Cawnival, Halloween, Winter's Feast). Mentioned name sounds more like some community event centered on something done competitively, like speed-runs - needless to say those aren't official KLei events.

Is that a server hosted by KLei?

If not, KLei has nothing to do with it and owner should mitigate how people on their server play or not. There are mods detecting what other people playing on servers are using mod-wise, so that can be a basis for owner to ban players "violating server's rules", i.e. "no mods". Otherwise DST vanilla isn't a competitive game. People do random stuff on dedicated servers, and if owner doesn't force rules upon them, each is free to do whatever on "1st come, 1st served" basis.

This can and has been bypassed by modifying game files

Why not just ban accounts that violate your sever rules? Seems not a common issue, well at least those servers I was in.

If I remember correctly, the feature you're asking for actually exists in the game, and you can enable it through server configuration.

But yes, there are already ways bypass it in the community, and you should know that it is technically impossible to "anti-cheat" without violating privacy.

No, that wasn't KLei's server. It was a player-funded public server. Normally, as you said, if there is a need for competitiveness, fairness can be achieved through some server mods restrictions. However, the fact is that some people who know how to code have bypassed these restrictions through local mods (the wording may be blurry since I'm not very familiar with modding code), and they use forbidden mods in competitive servers to undermine fairness and taunt players who are playing normally. Because the server is privately established and there is no effort to find "cheat" players without harming ordinary players, the server ultimately chose to close down.

As this is a large public server, with over 30 servers running, identifying cheaters without falsely accusing innocent players requires a significant amount of effort.

Yes, it is unrealistic to completely eradicate cheating, but we should at least raise the threshold for cheating. Just like there is no absolute fairness, it doesn't mean we should give up on fairness. Additionally, after raising the threshold for cheating, it may lead to the return of the "The Forge" and "The Gorge" activities (I really liked these modes, but they were already gone when I bought the game, so I could only play them through mods. It's quite regretful for me).

Are you talking about ark survival evolved? This sounds like the ark issues but replaced ark with don't starve. 

 

I feel like your Ai picked up alot of Ark survivial or something.

I feel like i understand your point now. There is a way to disable all client mods on a server, although it should be made alot more accessable. I want Gorge and Forge to return as perma gamemodes. They could have seperate teams working on it.

I also hope for the return of "The Gorge" and "The Forge". I enjoy the competitive and cooperative atmosphere similar to "SpeedRun", where strangers can share tips, develop strategies, and compete for the top spot on the leaderboard (well... as long as fairness is maintained).

Hmm...I'm not sure about the meaning of "Ragnarok" in English internet slang, but in Chinese internet culture, "Ragnarok" is often used to describe game environments that are poor and full of cheaters, like..."Ragnarok". I occasionally play "The Forge" on public servers myself and the atmosphere is great, I haven't seen any cheaters, but there are relatively few people playing this mode regularly, so the wait times can be long.
