Problem with the Rollback Feature.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I recently got a friend to buy DST and we’ve been playing together, with them hosting (so they get the least lag input) however.. when my friend tries to Roll the game save back it refuses to let him rollback any further than the moment he died.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the most likely cause for this is that my friend is on the Old Xbox One console, whilst I am Playing on a Xbox Series S- What Happens is I will load into the game probably about a good 30-60 seconds before they EVER do.. so their world can not rollback any further beyond that point.

@JoeW

Can you please look into this & let us know of any fix/work around is possible?

Rollbacks fail once you use up all the 5 extra rollback slots. If your friend rolled back 6 times without the game ever saving and started having issues after that, then that's how it is supposed to work, otherwise I hope this issue gets addressed.

Would probably be better and get more attention if you took this up in https://forums.kleientertainment.com/klei-bug-tracker/dont-starve-together/

I don’t think it’s a “bug” though, I think it’s just that players on the newer Xbox load into the game and are present in the world doing stuff for enough seconds that the game Autosaves a new rollback point (where the player respawns) meanwhile the player on the older Xbox who is hosting still hasn’t loaded into the game yet.

So far the only workaround we’ve found is if I leave the game completely, which lets them rollback as normal

note: you may need to wait around as a ghost for a few minutes to experience this.

The difference is in loading times.

You are correct, and It also leaves the host of the old Xbox vulnerable to being Grieved by Grief Players because if a Griever burned down the hosts base, & the host initiates a save rollback- The Griefer on the Newer Xbox will load into the game much faster than the Host on the Old Xbox ever will and can Burn their base again during this time.

So they are alive in the save, but dead by the time they gain control of their character?

idk if there is any bug here, but I would appreciate DST getting some type of "player just connected" security.  I've had it happen where I load out of the caves and die before I can take control of my character.  Sucks :\

In my friends situation he had sit idle as a ghost long enough for the game to save him being dead as a Ghost, meanwhile I am alive and well- My friend who is the Host of the Server and playing on the Xbox One console then uses the Rollback Feature to roll the world back, Meanwhile: I’m in that friends world on my Xbox Series S.

I will load into the game no joke a good 30-60 seconds before he ever finishes loading in. At this point: The game will register me as being alive and them as still being a ghost, and by the time he finally does load into the world (his ghost spawns) and he attempts to initiate a Second Rollback to BEFORE he died and became a Ghost it’s already Re-Saved him as being a Ghost & only rolls right back to that point.

If I LEAVE my friends game he can Rollback consecutive days as He normally would, but only if I Leave during the Rollback Rollback attempt.

The only other Workaround we’ve found so far is if he shuts the server down completely then before reloading his world choosing one of the previous auto-saves to roll back from.

So the problem is that the game rolls back to the most recent save.  In order to go back more than 1 save you either need to roll back again within a few seconds of loading from the first rolleback or exit the game and rollback 2 spots from the menu there.  Even playing solo sometimes I can't rollback in time to go a second save back from the in-game menu.  It can be frustrating, but without proper UI support to select your rollback point its better the game picks the safer route always picking the most recent save.  Either load out, roll back and load back in or use a mod (I know you're on console) that gives direct access to rolling back to save 1-2-3-4-5.

You didn’t listen to me.. so instead of trying to explain it I will just show you a video of it… THIS is the problem- (notice how the game saves the very moment I load in.. then count how long it takes before the worlds actual host ever loads in.)

Yes I did listen to you.  I am making an assumption the console version is just a port of the pc version, not a great re-write.  The game loads a server, and a client.  These both need to load.  Because your system is quicker you're client is loading quicker after their server loads, where their client takes significantly longer.

Do what I said - have them exit the game and do the rollback from the menu.  This way the game will wait for their client to load in before resuming, at which point you can quickly join.  It takes them so long to load in that their game isn't rolling back to the save before that one, on the menu you can easily select to roll back 2-5 saves.
