Treeguard spawning

Recommended Posts

In the early game, I like to give meat to a pig or two in the morning, take one chop at a tree, and just follow them with a shovel.  Is it my imagination, or does a treeguard always spawn if I *leave* even a single pig unattended, chopping trees?  Any early-game suggestions?

First years always a pain for wood for wormwood. I can't offer much help beyond maybe chopping birchnuts instead as the tree guards for them are much weaker, and although have a higher spawn rate, isn't too bad the first year. Although if it's already past autumn I wouldn't bother

If you haven't killed all the surface rooks (robot rhinos) you can use them to chop away.

Could also just build a bunnyman village nearby so that whenever a tree gaurd does spawn they get destroyed. Much better fighters than pigs.

If it's spring could just plant near ornery beefalos as well so that when the treeguards spawn they again get destroyed

Of course you could always wait until year 2, have bearger spawn and never worry about wood/living logs again

Its not in the code officially, but there is definitely something there where if you want treeguards you never get them, and if you don't want treeguards it spawns 5 of them instantly.  Spiders have the same feature to determine to give you monster meat, silk or glands.

Great advice - thanks!  I planted 40 trees by a rook and was able to harvest almost all the wood while taking very little damage.  That's my new wood-chopping preference!

Bearger happened to me as well.  I had to pick up some honey in front of him, but then he harvested a lot of wood for me!  When I was done, I just led him to the swamp where he aggroed on something else and eventually went to sleep.  He might be my favorite boss now.

Finally, I can just chop it myself if I have enough sanity restoring items, or can chop-a-little-plant-a-little.  Much ado is made about how great Wormwood is at manipulating sanity, and it's true, but you still need a plan for when you run out of seeds or places to plant them, and I'm still really excited to make jelly salad, just like any other character.

I've also learned how to make do with less wood - using torches instead of campfires, lighting trees on fire to warm up, and smashing lone pig houses for boards (and skins and stone).

Wormwood is very strange to play.  I think taming a beefalo was the turning point for me.  It gave me enough manure to make all the compost wrap I needed and saved me from damage so I need less healing.  I have to be really careful with it around bees in spring.

I thought Wormwood would be a great supporting character for multiplayer, and it would, but there are a number of weird special needs that mean Wormwood will still have to take solo jaunts for various things like poo, rot and seeds, and be in competition for nitrite with gunpowder.  Not sure how to make use of the special harvesting power for muscles, though sailing with Warly seems like a winning idea.
