If virtual validation points on the internet weren't perceived as important, sites like Twitter, Reddit or Facebook wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are. Reputation points can also make people think that opinion of less active members isn't as valuable as those who sit on forum all the time, but I guess it cannot be avoided.
