Wickerbottom is a great granny but her books are dumb and stinky

I think that wicker, as a character, becomes too reliant on reeds being in close proximity to one another to make the most of her, which more often than not; means you want a reed trap. The fact that you need to gather 4 reeds per 1 papyrus means that bad swamp generation can really screw you over, even if you do make use of her books to the best capacity that you can with advanced farms like grass, twigs, and reed farms with lureplants. 
Her books however, are still pretty strong when you can get them. Being able to use birds of the world/sleepy time stories to farm krampii/feathers/morsels is incredibly useful, the aforementioned lureplant farms are incredibly strong, and on tentacles is relatively useful for certain farms/getting more tentacle spots. (not to mention they're also real good for any wurt players that might be in the server)
More books will always be welcome though because as it currently is; playing wickerbottom is a bit lackluster imo

Wickerbottom can provide a nice early boon with Applied Silvicture in a coop world by getting a couple hundred grass/twigs before the 1st winter or allowing woodie/maxwell to farm more wood.

Aside from that, I don't see how her other books can shine in the early game.

But she's a tremendous late game asset (krampus farm, morsel farm, lureplant grass/twig farm, etc.)

As for "On Tentacles", this power is very underwhelming per 2022 standards. She's clearly bested by Wendy and Winona at every turn (BQ, spiders, monkeys and so on). If the lazy forager was buffed this skill would be slightly more attractive (but still inferior to aforementioned methods).
Not mentioning how much of a pain it can be to get those tentacle spots in the 1st place because of a stupidly low drop rate (I had instances when I didn't get a single spot after having killed 20 tentacles, imagine the frustration !).
