Did your game freeze up after entering level 2 of the Caves (the Ruins)? Please read.

Recommended Posts

For over two years, several Pocket Edition players have reported that when in the Caves and descending further to level 2 (the Ruins), their game enters a state in which it becomes unresponsive.  Some describe it by a severe drop in the frame rate, as if the game bogs down and becomes busy with some unknown work.  Inventory sound effects can be heard, and it is very difficult or impossible for the UI to respond to your taps.  Reloading the game may only return you to the same hung game state, and so you may no longer be able to make any progress in the game, effectively losing it altogether.

Many threads have been created about this bug in the Pocket Edition forum.  For a history of the issue, see the links at the bottom of this post.

The reason for my post is to help get this problem fixed (full disclosure:  I’ve been playing this game too and want to explore the Ruins just as much as anyone else!).  Klei would like to fix it too, and they have tried to reproduce this bug but have been unsuccessful up to this point.  So here’s what I’m suggesting…

If YOU encounter this bug while you are playing the game, please:

1)  Make Klei aware that you encountered it by posting in this forum.  Even better: POST IN THIS THREAD to consolidate this knowledge and make it easier for Klei.

2)  Include in your post your platform configuration as suggested by the pinned thread “IMPORTANT -- Information to Include With Bug Reports” at the top of this forum:  device, model number, OS version, etc.

3)  Try to provide a screenshot of your frozen game; it may be of some use in determining what happened

4)  And very important:  provide Klei with some *context*.  In other words, what was happening just prior to your game freezing?  Did you just perform an action or tap on an object?  What was happening in the UI that might have led to the freeze?

The last suggestion will only help bugs like this one in the Ruins get fixed faster.  Klei needs to be able to reproduce this issue in order to have a good chance of fixing it.  But in order to reproduce it, they need as much information as possible from your particular game session because they don’t have your save file and obviously can’t play your game to find what you’re talking about.

I’ve seen many posts in this forum that follow this general format:

Help, I have a problem with the game.  I just got this error.  Please fix!

[screenshot of error screen]

That’s not helpful to Klei.  Without providing any specifics, they don’t know where to begin looking for the problem.  They need context:  WHERE did you get that error screen?  WHAT were you doing or what was happening?  Does it ALWAYS happen or just in certain instances?  etc. etc.

This is more helpful:

I was in the Caves at the entrance to the Ruins, I tapped to descend into them, and approximately 15 seconds after I did so, I got this bug.  I may have shuffled a couple of things around in my inventory just before it, and there was a mob that aggroed on me when I first entered the Ruins.  That’s about all I know.

In other words, PLEASE be specific!  I’m sure that we would all like to be able to explore the Ruins without risking having our games lost and having to start over from Day 1.  So please remember:

more detail in your post = better chance of Klei fixing this bug

If you do encounter this bug, please follow these suggestions.  And (ideally), please reply to this thread with your findings rather than start a new disconnected one.  Let’s make it easier for this bug to get fixed so we can explore the Ruins in Pocket Edition without losing games.  Thanks!
