Why do whitelists not work at all?

Recommended Posts

I had a dedicated server of with just one server slot open and that slot was whitelisted so that (theoritically) only I could join the server.

That was not the case. I went to have some lunch and once I came back, I could not join my world as someone was already in it, despite the whitelist.

I've had to delete the world as a result since it was for a series.

Does anyone know why whitelists are not working at all?

I never tried the whitelist, but the following things come to my mind:

1. Make sure you actually have whitelisting enabled in the settings

Spoiler

Under the [Network] entry in the cluster.ini:

whitelist_slots

  • Default: 0
  • The number of reserved slots for whitelisted players. To whitelist a player, add their Klei UserId to the whitelist.txt file (Place this file in the same directory as cluster.ini)
  • Master cluster.ini only (See NOTES)

For only whitelisted players I'd assume that you have to set the whitelist_slots to equal or greater to the max slots of your server. In your case the entry would be

whitelist_slots: 1

2. Make sure your entry in the whitelist.txt is correct. It's very finicky to get the exact nunbering right, so I'd ban myself and move the entry from the banlist to the whitelist. After the next restart it should work.
