Beta Test of Don't starve board game

Recommended Posts

Initially, I did not plan to publish this board game for general access, since it was intended exclusively for a portfolio for admission to a game design institute (game design is not only computer games, but also board games). However, I cannot use it, not only because I do not have the rights to use the characters from Don't Starve, but also because I am not sure how well my game is performing. All the rules were invented by me from scratch (although it is quite possible that someone had already done something similar before me) and therefore I do not know for sure if my game works, especially since I have no one to test this game with. The copyright issue was resolved, I left the same rules, but at the same time completely redid all the textures so that they did not even look like Don't Starve, this meant that I literally had to redraw everything. However, I also did not want to throw out all the textures that I made for the game, so I  posted the DS version of th game on the forum. All the prints you need for the game are at the bottom, but if you really plan to play the game, you must be prepared for the fact that it will take a very long time to print it all. If you only need certain things, then at the bottom there are also separate pictures that you must place in any graphics editor on a picture with a size of 4960x3508, and then print on A4 sheet. The game is designed for 3-4 players. I am not forcing you, but if you tried to play the game, then you will greatly help me with your advice. I will try to take it into account and modify the game, and then replace the old DS version of the game with the updated DS version of the game. There are many rules, but I don't think they are very complicated. It will also be cool if you help me with the creation of balance maps.

Everything that you need to play

Rules:

The main task of the player is to build the accomploshrine. The one who did it first won. Players take turns, clockwise (or whatever you like). In total, a player can perform any 5 actions in a turn, and these actions can be repeated. Possible actions: walking, interacting with an object (not with an items), attack, craft, equipment.

walking

Spoiler

Players can walk as many cells as the dice dropped out. The player cannot walk through any objects, including the player. Player can walk through objects

fighting

Spoiler

You can spend your action to attack, but your actions are not spent if you are attacked. You can only attack neutral creatures (players, biffalo, pigmans), such creatures as spiders, spiders warrior and hounds will attack you as soon as you approach them at a distance of one intersection of cells.primer1.thumb.png.2f0dca2ca4e24d707b248fa83ad27f59.png

The first attack is made by the player, if the battle is between two players, then the first one is attacked by the one who attacked. On cards with creatures it is written how many lives they have and how many lives they take during an attack. The one who attacks, rolls the dice and takes away as many lives as fell on the dice, after that, the player is deprived of as many lives as the damage dealt by the creature against which he is fighting. Items already equipped on the player can improve the chance of victory. A player cannot equip while already being attacked.

spider.thumb.png.dd78cc3721a76c03b371f6b888483b4d.png

After defeating a creature, the player can get loot. Loot depends on the conditions on the mob cards. Some loot can be drawn under any conditions (then a dice with the letter "N" will be drawn in the condition), sometimes you will need to roll a dice to get an item. If the player kills the player, then the winning player takes all the loser's items, and the loser becomes a ghost (dead players do not leave the game immediately, they can still win the game). If the player was killed by a creature, then the player loses all his items and leaves them where he died, no matter how many lives the creature had last time, the next time the creature met any player, the creature will have full lives.

items

Spoiler

Interacting with items never spend actions. If an item is floating on the map, then the player can pick it up by simply stepping on the cell where this object is located. Several items can be scattered in one cell. Items are stored in inventory. Initially, the player can store no more than 9 items in the inventory (items cannot be stacked like in a video game). If this number of slots is not enough, you will have to craft a backpack to give you an additional number of slots, but at the same time it must be equipped on the player, if the backpack was removed from the player, then he will have to drop out the item to the place on which player stands (this does not waste player actions). The player can throw any items at any time (except the moment when you are fighting), as well as pick them up. So if the player found the place where the last player died, then he can decide what to drop out and what to pick up.

Some items can be spent getting something in return

berries.png.0d7e14d64e29dc165a5483fb7fa04ce3.png - restores 1 hunger

spider_gland.png.0b8c3fffccb110cac4d8c11cd7ea7df2.png - restores 2 live

equipment

Spoiler

You can spend one action to equip or re-equip, which means that if you announced that you spend an action on equip, you can equip as much and as you like, until you start performing other actions, so if you want one turn to equip for one action, and after performing this action you want to pre-equip, then you will have to spend your action again. You can equip only one item per head, only one per body, and only one per hand. To indicate what was equipped, you must put these items in the slots on the character card, equipped items are not in your inventory.

life and hunger

Spoiler

lifes:

The player starts with 12 lives at the start of the game or after respawning. Lives are not restored after fighting someone. If you killed someone, but remained with 1 life, then you will have to continue playing with that many lives or find how to recover. The number of lives of the player and the creature is tracked by the number of life cards.

hunger:

Each player starts with 4 different kinds of hunger cards to track the current hunger. After the turn has passed to the next player, satiety is taken away from the previous player. Each turn, when the player has no hunger cards, 4 life is taken from him.

craft

Spoiler

To craft an item, you need to spend an action and items required for this craft. All crafting can be seen in the table. To craft some items, it is necessary to be with certain objects at a distance of one cell connection. You cannot spend one action to craft two objects, for example. To craft two items, you need two actions. You can also craft objects, which means that you can then put it on an adjacent cell with you at any time, without wasting actions. Keep in mind that, for example, a science machine you have built can be used by any player, anyone can destroy it with a hammer, and it will not be possible to step on the cell where your device is located.

death

Spoiler

If the player has no life cards left, he dies. Immediately after death, the next player begins to walk, and the player who died becomes a ghost. If the move went to the ghost, then he can perform only one action and he can only walk. In the form of a ghost, the player cannot interact with objects, the player cannot do anything except walk around the cells using a cube. The player in the form of a ghost is able to pass through objects. To become alive again, the ghost needs to stand on the adjacent cell of touch stone, then the ghost becomes alive, and the next player begins to walk, after the revival, this player starts the game for himself again, but from the place where he relive.

Unfortunately, there are no examples of arranging objects on maps, but if you have one go write or public images here. Initially, the map should contain all objects except for players, ghost players, bushes without berries, and also on the map there should be flint in the form of items. Including you must mark at the beginning of the game where you start

If you have ideas or something is not clear or I have not finished something somewhere, be sure to write

It is also possible that if the DS version of this game turns out to be not bad, I will publish updates of this game here so that you could try other ideas for these game.

Despite the fact that no one wrote anything in this thread, I still noticed that sometimes my board game was mentioned in other topics, as well as its visual style was a little discussed in one discord server dedicated to DST. Surprisingly, everyone liked the visual style in which the game was made, however, unfortunately, I did not hear a single comment about the gameplay itself, although as for me this is the most important thing in board games. Unfortunately, I don't have people with whom I could play it. I know my board game is too unpopular for someone to try it out, but I also noticed that another thread mentioned that someone wanted to try it. If so, then I would be very happy to hear criticism about this game and learn about where I should make things more balanced, what should I remove and what should I fix. Although the fact that the game does not have templates for creating maps consisting of 4 sheets of the field and the fact that for the game itself you need to print a couple of sheets and cut a lot, makes my opportunity to receive criticism about the game even more difficult.

Despite the fact that I can't use this board game as a portfolio for institut entrance. If I fix all the bugs coming from the game tests and everyone really likes the game, then I can start adding a lot of new things. This is why Webber, Wigfrid, Wes, Maxwell and others are not yet in the game, they are in stock in case the game actually turns out to be good and I can make updates or DLC for the game that will make the game more varied and interesting.

I did not come empty-handed, and as a thank you for the support and positive feedback (which for some reason were voiced in a different topic and in a separate discord server, but not in this topic) I want to give you a new playable character for the board game, Rober Wagstaff.

Here is a printout of it, the details are in the very first post on this topic:

Hello Mika, I love the idea of a Don't starve board game ! Nice work man. It looks awesome

Thank you.  Unfortunately, I abandoned the project, but I'm glad you liked it.  I have another game not based on Don't starve in which I used the work from here.
