A simple, albeit more space consuming, way of doing this is stick an element sensor->shutoff combo right after the proper filter. It should always function properly to filter out a second element without increasing power costs. This gives you all the foolproof function of the filter without the drawbacks of the sensor/shutoff combo when you need to filter two elements.
