How to host a dedicated private server with low resources?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I've hosted servers before to play privately and try to prove all the features of the game. First, I tried hosting a server on the same PC I play with but it is not good enough to both host the server and play in it. Also, I managed to host the server on an older laptop I had which just stopped working one day and I was not able to host the server anymore.

So, I would like to ask you: How do you manage to host a private server on another device and play from your main PC?

I have a little knowledge on networks, and I think I could be able to find some free hosting service on the internet, install a Don't Starve Together Dedicated Server, run the server with a password and play from my computer. But I woud like to know if any of you managed to do so, if not, I could give a try and tell what happened.

And a public server obviously is not a solution, it's fun and all but you rarely make it to summer and you are just tired before the start of spring and need to quit.
Thanks!

You won't find anyone allow you to host DST for free, unless it's a good friend, because DST's CPU usage will skyrocket the older the world gets, how much stuff is in the world and how many players are actively playing at the same time.

So, with how many players do you want to play on your private server? Also, why don't you join a community hosted server, one that has an active moderation team that kicks and bans griefers, fixes stuff and/or rolls back when needed?

Yeah, less likely. I was thinking in some company that does so but I only have found website hosting services.

It sounds pretty good. Aren't those Steam Groups?

Yes, there are plenty of community dedicated servers, just pick one where you got best connection with and see how well it goes playing there.
