Reskinning A Character

Hello all a while ago i came up with an idea of Woodlegs looking like a darker more piratey pirate. I want to try and create a mod much like a mod I used a while ago called Better Maxwell to change Woodlegs art and possibly that of his lucky hat. I was wondering what tutorials i should use and if any additional steps are needed to take to change the art while keeping all the rest of stuff (without creating a whole new character). I was assuming I would be recommended to use the extended template character tutorial but wanted to ask and make sure this would be the best one to use.
