Some hopes for the new updates

Recommended Posts

With the new update coming out soon that seems to imply a fairly big change in the direction DST is going I would like to relay some of my thoughts on the current negatives and potential solutions. Maybe it will be helpful information in development maybe not.

  • There should be more incentive to actually be together. Right now DST still feels like a single player game that was duct taped together to make a multiplayer game. To clarify i'm specifically talking about how in game there is very very little reason to interact with anyone else besides to share resources. There have already been measures taken to improve upon this such as the several raid bosses, buffed enemy health, and a variety of multiplayer oriented buildings but the problem continues to persist. I have a very close knit group of friends that play all sorts of games together and we enjoy them because in most of those games constantly working together is rewarded. In DST we've never really been able to enjoy playing together much because in almost all cases it's more rewarding to split up to collect resources and explore. What I hope in the coming updates is for sticking together to be rewarded in a variety of ways. For example more multiplayer oriented abilities with the upcoming reworks, resources that reward cooperative play and other such motivation to actually play together. The Forge and the Gorge both were very good at rewarding cooperative play and I have no doubt in my mind that it can be done with regular DST

  • The new reworks should focus on making a survivor convenient and fun rather than be perfectly balanced with the rest of the cast. If you were to compare the two ends of the spectrum in terms of in game popularity Wendy and Willow (Note - It's just my observation Wendy is one of the more popular survivors) the biggest difference between the two is the convenience of their abilities. Wendy's positive ability Abigail automatically follows, regenerates and attacks with very little input from the player beyond summoning her. Even her con is convenient in that it doesn't require much special planning to deal with since it's a constant in her character and never changes. Willow on the other hand is an extremely tedious survivor (I play her a lot regardless but..) her lighter may be useful in cooking on the go and as a small light but it's inconvenient to acquire as the materials needed tend to be out of the way to get and there are far better alternatives in most cases. Bernie as well is extremely inconvenient in that he has to be manually be brought everywhere, a single Bernie is hardly ever enough if you're trying to do something fancy such as ignoring sanity while using blue shrooms and nightmare armor while fighting, and it's materials are annoying to acquire. Her sanity chills are also inconvenient for a variety of reasons I probably don't need to list. With the new survivor reworks my hope is for all the survivors to either keep their low level of tedium or for it to be reduced.

  • Lastly it should be easier to show others what you're working on so they can participate if they so desire. Currently working together to craft things and make a base is really irritating as there is no reasonable way to show each other what the other needs or wants to do without listing each and everything they need. With the more recent update with construction plans I hope that it will be extended to work with regular buildings and maybe even regular crafting recipes to fix this smaller issue.

I'm really looking forward to the new updates regardless but I just felt I needed to say what I was thinking.

TLDR; More multiplayer oriented things, make survivor reworks convenient, and make it easier to show people what you are trying to craft.

I would agree with the fact that there needs to be a reason to cooperate more. The only times that I saw true teamwork in pubs was during events since getting a victory is very hard and requires good teamwork. But in normal DST that isn't really the case... the player base feels too separated in playstyle. First, there is the pro wes main that kills dragonfly from day 3 and doesn't say a single word in chat, then there's the semi-serious teamwork guy who tries to single-handedly  get all the food and resources for the base, then there are people that just stay in the base for a long time and occasionally say stuff and do nothing. They make the majority of the player base. This makes pubs really boring and whenever I decide to come to visit a 4-5 player base, I just get bored very quickly since there's nothing to be excited about and usually leave after a while.
