I would be happy with just a sign that you can write arbitrary notes on! An auto-sign would be tricky because a compactor with dozens of different items in it would have a huge tag or take forever to scroll. Even as separate piece of furniture or canvas - but instead of picture it allows you to put a note there. Like "to do later" "don't touch" or "no idea what to do with it" XD. Or even list with names of materials to choose from. I'd like a Notations Overlay where we can pin all sorts of notes on the map and toggle them on/off with the press of a button.
