Basically it appears to be the case that if you pipe water into hydroponic farms and plant mealwood on them, even though mealwood does not require any water, what will happen is that after one growth cycle, a 5 kg bottle of water will pop out of the hydroponic farm—effectively taking water out of the system. I'm going to assume this isn't intended, but it may just be a design oversight.
1. Build a hydroponic farm.
2. Pipe a water supply into the farm tile (hydroponic farm tiles also don't function without a pipe on the tile, so to even be able to use them you either have to pipe actual water to the tile or trick the game by placing a disconnected pipe on the tile).
3. Plant mealwood on the hydroponic farm tile.
4. Wait an entire growth cycle (no clue whether enabling auto-harvest or not makes a difference, in my case I have auto-harvest off).
5. You will probably see a 5k bottle of water pop out of the hydroponic tile, effectively removing water from the pipe when it really shouldn't be doing that?
