Let me guess... you had only a steam rocket, some research modules and a c0mmand capsule, ant they came back worth 399 science points. 

I think, the devs want us to actually use the solid thruster at least once. Otherwise you could just fly 2 times to 10k destinations (if there are 2) and directly switch to petroleum engine.

Thats why you always should bring one more science module than you need Research. I hope they fix that at some point.

 

And no, @SharraShimada, thats not intentional, and you can go to petrouleum by flying a steam rocket with 6 science modules to each 10k planet(there are always 2).

One learns a thing every day. For no reason at all, i always just packed 5 research modules on my rocket... Strange.
