800kg = 400kg

Attached is a savefile wherein some Iron Ore exists:

The tiles report 800kg of Iron Ore, but when I was digging it out I noticed a different number:

On closer inspection, the Iron Ore does indeed appear to be digging out as 400kg:

I thought maybe it was dropping two stacks of 400kg next to each other, but it's not. The full excavated amount is 400kg.

This has always been the case. It is intended behaviour. You lose 50% of the mass of a natural tile when digging it out.

This is why people sometimes bother to melt ice tiles when faced with a large amount of them. This way you preserve the full mass of water.

It's technically not explained but is indirectly explained from the tool that the dupes use to dig with (you find out this randomly in one of the lore you can learn about in the game from POI).
