I'd also like to mention that when an AoE boss (such as Deerclops) hits a target within its initial range (in this video, abigail), the actual hit range of the entire attack gets extended based on the initial victim's position. (Since Abigail got hit, she extends the hit range to you).

So you need to be careful when other living things are nearby.

As the person above said, AoE is currently bugged in that it uses hit targets as a "relay" to spawn another AoE on said hit target.
