it does, you jumped with 5 souls and the timer started and until the timer ends or you perform a second jump you dont waste the soul

i think it should waste the soul and start the timing to get the free jump, maybe in that way is more clear

I have taken this as feedback for the mechanic readability but functionally it is working as it is expected to be.
