noob question - ice weird behavior

Is it bug?

creating this (1st picture):

ice 100kg 250K

H2 1000kg 350K per tile

unpause and after couple of seconds we have H2 at approx 225K...240K per tile

I just wanted to make sure - how much water will you get if you melt without digging

It looks like you have done the test yourself and should have the answer...

From your screens, the ice has absorbed some of the heat in the H2, melted and re-frozen until the system has reached equilibrium, this does not stand out as anything out of the ordinary or what I wouldn't expect.

Of course, if there is MORE ice in your H2/Ice system than what you started with, then that would be a bug.

If it did produce more ice from melting and refreezing over what can be made from digging, is it really worth the effort?

There is a known bug, that seems to have been poked with a stick in the preview build, that causes mixed gasses to transform erratically to different elements.  Some people are finding Propane in their NatGas Vents, for example.
