Add Iridium to the game

Recommended Posts

A small amount of 'native' metals (aka count as refined without any processing) would be good for the game.

But I feel we should be replacing Gold with Platinum in order to do this, first platinum is actually found this way. and it is known to be common in asteroids.  The number of tiles of metal in the slime biome would be lowered with the Native Platinum usually found as isolated single tiles so it is not easy to get.

The problem with gold and the reason it should go is that it's quality of higher melting point makes no sense, gold melts at 1337K which is basically identical to the 1357K that Copper melts at.  Outside of the obvious decor buff these metals should be similar from a thermal/electrical perspective.  But Platinum melts at 2041K which is well above Iron and Nickel (1811K and 1728K respectively), Iridium is even more impressive at 2719K (we reserve the tiny amounts of Irridium here on Earth for the most high temperature applications).  The only thing with a higher melting point then Iridium is Tungsten at 3695K.

So I say put Iridium in the Ice Biome where Tungsten is now and bump Tungsten into the Oil/Lava biomes so we still have more metals to explore in the late game.

Remember the formula for Oxylite is entirely fictional and could be changed easily, or continue to be hand-waved away.
