HomShaBom
I can't get DST or DS to run. Other games run just fine, even other Klei games. I can play ONI, but I cannot play DS or DST. When I try to run DST I get a steam popup that says "Installing: Microsoft DirectX for WIndows (step 1 of 1)" The progress bar fills up, then the popup closes, but the game doesn't start. I get no error message or anything. It just tells me it's installing directx for windows for the 100th time and nothing happens. Dreamscape18459
Can you please post your system specs? If you have not tried verifying the integrity of the game cache. If that doesn't help then finding the DirectX stuff the game needs and installing it from a Microsoft site might work. I don't know if the game downloads the DirectX files from Steam or from a Microsoft hosted site but I think it installs from a Valve Steam server. If it installs from a Steam server it could be slower or have other issues due to the Winter sale going on. Are you playing on Windows or a different operating system? Dreamscape18459
Hm....It could potentially be an issue with Steam's servers if you are still unable to play. I would normally suggest defragmenting your hard drive but your pc is new so it shouldn't make a difference. If you have not done so already you can delete Steams download cache. Go to Steam in the top left corner of the client, then go to settings. Find Downloads and near the bottom is "Clear download cache." This deletes Steams appcache folder. If this doesn't work then you could try manually deleting it. (Which is located here for me. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\appcache) You could try deleting Steams depotcache folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\depotcache) Depotcache is a folder that appears to be used primarily for preloading games prior to release but I don't know what else it exactly does. If you do some users suggest exiting Steam before deleting these and relogging when they have been deleted. Here is a bit more information about download issues (and the above folders) directly from Valve. Its intended for Steamworks developers when they introduced the Steampipe system in 2013 but it should contain something useful for solving this issue. https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/sdk/uploading?l=english Klei staff should be a lot more familiar with the Steampipe system than me so hopefully one of them see's this thread if clearing the cache worked. Again I don't know what depotcache exactly does so deleting it may be a bad idea. (Or a potential fix.) You could also try reaching out to Steam support but....Valve's support department only consists of WX's so you will probably not get to talk to an actual employee. HomShaBom
So, I don't know what the issue was, but I just reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled windows, reinstalled mobo drivers, reinstalled all windows updates, reinstalled steam, reinstalled DST, now it works.
